In testimony to the Senate Armed Services subcommittee, U.S. defense officials stressed the importance of increased investment in space capabilities to retain #SpaceDominance. John D. Hill and Gen. Michael A. Guetlein warned of growing threats from China and Russia, prompting the Pentagon to allocate $33.7 billion in its 2025 budget for space programs. Key priorities include #SatelliteCommunications, #MissileWarningSystems, and collaboration with allies. Moreover, the integration of #CommercialSpaceTechnologies is critical to strengthening the nation's defense architecture, ensuring resilience and #NationalSecurity against emerging #counterspace threats. The urgency for action stems from adversaries' efforts to close the space dominance gap, necessitating continued investment in innovation and joint-force capabilities to safeguard national security. https://lnkd.in/eFtQg_8b #SpaceWarfare #SpaceForce #USDefense #InnovationInSpace #StrategicInvestments #SpaceResilience #SatelliteCommunications #MissileWarningSystems #DefenseBudget2025 #USAllies #InteroperabilityInSpace #CounterSpaceCapabilities #SpaceSecurity #SpaceArchitecture

ALL EYES UP! Space is our moral (and mortal) responsibility. Safe Passage is a solved problem set. It is a known known. Unfortunately, it is understood to only a select few, unclear to many, and unknown to most. Misunderstanding is causing missed opportunities. WE cannot afford a miscalculation. Space is every joint warfighter’s AOR. Beyond integrating space products, utilities, and services as key strategic advantages for national security, it is time to broadly institutionalize defensive and offensive space operations and effects as acknowledged traditional military activities for national defense. From Competition to Crisis to Conflict: WE must ensure delivery of Spacepower effects to the Joint Force, the Nation, and our Allies through Gray Zone asymmetries … WE must protect and defend Spacepower projection assets through Dynamic Space Operations … and WE must prevail over any Space-enabled attack against the Joint Force through resilient Tactically Responsive Space options. Set conditions, Secure the frontline, Shape the future. WE must always be able to Advance – Adapt – Augment for assured astro access and action. A skill-web will unweave their kill-web. This is how WE stratify the Stratosphere. The global arms race is accelerating, with #military expenditures projected to set new records in 2024. However, the urgent threat of #unconventional warfare centered on "gray-zone" aggression remains underappreciated- leaving the West vulnerable. Future #escalations are likely to involve nontraditional tactics aimed at crippling critical infrastructure. Both Russia and China progress in developing unconventional #weaponry has been described as “breathtakingly fast” by the head of U.S. Space Command. As shown in this Alpine Macro chart, critical infrastructure is already under assault from cyberattacks—just one facet of unconventional warfare. Other paralyzing threats include kinetic and non-kinetic attacks on space assets, subsea cable tampering, and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) strikes. Our latest #innovationthemesandstrategy report highlights why Western nations must proactively strengthen vital infrastructure by adopting advanced technologies across hardware and software that go beyond conventional defense measures. NATO’s recent ideas about warfighting across multiple domains (MDO) are everywhere in today's defence discussions, but what scientific and ‘folksy’ logics underpin them? In my latest co-authored article with Anders Klitmøller, we show how #NATO MDO policy proceeds on rhetoric and features of complexity thinking, effectively transforming it into a plausible ‘folk theory.’ The policy captures attention with its convincing and intuitive appeal, suggesting novel approaches to warfare in an increasingly uncertain and interconnected world. However, as we argue, MDO extends beyond strategic innovation. It brings strong normative implications for how warfare is organized and envisioned, despite its shaky empirical and conceptual grounding. This can lead to an ideological influence within the defence and security sectors, shaping how the future is constructed within these fields and impacting how conflicts are envisioned and executed. Check out our work for a deeper dive into how these influential ideas are shaping the way we think about and prepare for the future of conflict. #NATO #MDO #Complexity #Security #Defence

Our new paper: What Will Happen in the First Space Hostage Crisis? – September, 2024 Gordon Roesler - Marc Feldman - Patrick Lin While the concept may seem far-fetched, there is a high probability that malicious actors will take hostages in space in the near future. The growth of space as a commercial sector and critical military area of operations makes such an incident almost inevitable. Given current US policies, capabilities, jurisdictional conflicts, and force structures, however, such an event will likely lead to sub-optimal crisis handling by the US government. This paper explores the potential for hostage-taking in space and the deficiencies of existing countermeasures and incident response processes—along with possible solutions that can avert the worst outcomes in the future. https://lnkd.in/erJXakB4

Though not a SOF-specific problem, Sandor Fabian (Ph. D.)'s article is a reminder that we need to reevaluate our National military relationship with technology. High tech solutions can provide great protection to the joint force and to our p[artners, but can also provide a false security (illusion) if we fail to first understand the role that "super-empowered populations" now play in war. Yes, technology is important, but Low tech and no tech solutions that are highly survivable and easily transferable to populations in crisis are invaluable. https://lnkd.in/eJUUitzc

How much does the US spend on Space Force? The United States Space Force (USSF), the first new military branch since 1947, was created to safeguard America’s interests in space amid evolving global threats. Established in 2019, Space Force’s mission includes protecting US military and economic assets in space and deterring aggression beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Since its inception, the Space Force’s budget has grown significantly. In 2020, $40 million was allocated to set up operations. By 2021, the funding had risen to $15.4 billion as the branch became fully operational. Fast forward to 2024, and the budget has nearly doubled to $26.3 billion, with a focus on research, development, and strengthening satellite defense systems. With nations like China and Russia identified as potential threats, the Space Force is rapidly developing resilient satellite constellations, networks, and data links to ensure the US remains a dominant force in space. #SpaceForce #DefenseSpending #SpaceSecurity #USMilitary #SpaceExploration #NationalSecurity

Operation Popeye was a weather modification program carried out by the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War in 1967–1972. It disrupted North Vietnamese military supplies by softening road surfaces and causing landslides. The program was conducted from Thailand over Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. It was allegedly sponsored by Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and the CIA without the authorization of then Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird, who had categorically denied to Congress that a program for modification of the weather for use as a tactical weapon even existed. After the Vietnam War, the Weather Modification Convention signed by UN members in 1978 banned weather warfare, or the modification of weather to induce damage or destruction. The High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program, or HAARP, is a scientific endeavor aimed at studying the properties and behavior of the ionosphere. The facility is located near Gakona, Alaska. It began in 1993, and was jointly funded by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The facility occupies an area of 33 acres which contains an array of 180 radio antennas. Its original purpose was to analyze the ionosphere and investigate the potential for developing ionospheric enhancement technology for radio communications and surveillance. The facility was heavily fenced, armed guards protected the entrance. No visitors were permitted without authorized access.
