🌱 The Green Business Building opportunity 🌍 Last week, I had the privilege of attending McKinsey & Company's Green Business Building Summit #GBB24 in Berlin, and it was nothing short of inspiring! The summit shed light on the immense potential of building green businesses and to drive positive change across industries, from mobility and buildings to energy and agriculture. What's even more exciting is the diversity of players involved – from startups and incumbents to investors and consultants – all coming together to build up new business and create sustainable solutions for our planet. One of the key takeaways from the summit was the emergence of new business models, particularly those rooted in the circular economy. It's clear that the traditional ways of doing business are evolving, and there's a growing emphasis on sustainability and environmental stewardship. Amidst the wealth of insights shared, two moments stood out to me personally: Witnessing my school friend Dr. Michael Müller pitch his startup, PFLANZENTHEKE GmbH, which offers an innovative system for vertical farming that addresses the risks of climate change for agriculture and significantly reduces the use of land and water. Michael's dedication to sustainable and climate resilient agriculture resonated with me deeply, and I'm convinced that his startup will flourish. Sampling burgers made with plant-based alternatives from The Seaweed Company and having the opportunity to meet their founder, Joost Wouters. His commitment to sustainable food solutions is both admirable and energizing. As we reflect on the discussions and connections made at #GBB24, I'm filled with optimism about the future of green business. Let's collaborate, innovate, and drive positive change together. How can SMEs inject more sustainability into their core business?    This morning, our co-founder Sebastiaan F.M. De Block shared his expertise on the matter at the Idé Coffee morning.    Idé Coffee Systems organised this event showcasing their journey towards sustainable entrepreneurship and inspiring other SMEs to follow suit.   In collaboration with the Ecological Entrepreneur, Idé Coffee recently calculated the carbon emissions of their organisation and operations. Based on these results, they developed a strategy to incorporate more sustainability into their organisation and reduce their CO2 emissions. They are working, amongst other things, on:  - basic elements like renewable energy, electrifying the fleet, ...  - development of a secondlife product line, where refurbishment of coffee machines is central - a clear purchase & supplier policy to ensure all suppliers are met with the highest standards and criteria. In this way they ensure they work on their own emissions Scope 1, 2, and focus on the main impact: their products & service. Naturally, this event was organised in the most sustainable way possible. Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian breakfast with vegan options. Additionally, they received individual CO2 emissions reports for their journey to the event, with the option to compensate these emissions to reduce this impact as much as possible.    #event #sustainability #business #SME #idecoffeemornings

The diversity in projects, both in ambitions and scope, left a lasting impression on me – a much-needed reflection of the industry's dynamic landscape. 🌐 Key Discussions: A Glimpse into the Future of Food Innovation 🚮 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 Upcycling food waste faces substantial regulatory and quality barriers. Projects like AbonoKm0 focus on converting non-replicable waste into compost, while Madari zumos takes an industrial approach by addressing waste from juice production. 💊 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 Three projects with different approaches to health: focusing on a key moment with MARIARMONIA and maternity; looking at a key ingredient and working on an alternative with Lākō and using big data for consumer’s education during their shopping with GUNDO. 🔬 𝐑&𝐃 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 ProPlantae and Protiberia are pioneering new ways to produce aligned with a sustainable vision. Proplantae focuses on alternatives to pesticides, while Protiberia places its bet on insect-based proteins within a circular model. 👩🌾 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 My three favourite projects stand out not for super tech or astronomical ROI, but for the tangible impact they create. Corbe setas de bodega transforms abandoned wine caves into mushroom cultivation rooms, Ca Climent revitalises abandoned land using forgotten crops at the intersection of tradition and modernity, and La Albarda represents a small holistic management project in Teruel. The EWA 2023 Pitch Day featured 10 projects, each presenting a unique vision for the future. From local to global initiatives, and small-scale to large-scale endeavors, it was the perfect blend needed to drive regeneration forward.
