Naked Innovations is an innovation consultancy based in Barcelona, Spain, dedicated to driving food-system transformation. Our work focuses on three core areas: Talent Incubation, Venture Enabling, and Ecosystem Curation. We work with a diverse group of stakeholders throughout the food system including corporates, government organisations, non-profits, research institutions and startups. Since launching we have built a network of over 5400 agrifood experts, scaled over 320 startups and acquired a group of 20+ expert collaborators. Our multinational team of ‘co-creators, fresh-thinkers, disruptors, shakers and provocateurs’ have over 180 years of collective experience in agrifood and are passionate about creating a regenerative food system that aligns planet & people. We fuse the most relevant elements of innovation methodologies such as design thinking and lean startup in order to meet the needs of our clients and bring concepts to life.     Introducing CONCAT LL 🌎: the Living Lab dedicated to building climate resilience in Catalonia’s agriculture. The European Commission's report on climate change revealed that certain regions in Europe could face up to a 30% reduction in crop yields by 2050, especially concerning the Mediterranean region 🚜. 👉With the various climate crises impacting Catalonian agriculture, one clear example being the drought emergency that hit its territories earlier this year, it has never been more evident that the effects of climate change are being lived now, and are not just a future concern. This is why, through our partnership with IRTA and Federació de Cooperatives Agràries de Catalunya, we are aiming to redefine how we mitigate the effects of climate change in Catalonia, through CONCAT LL 🌎. This October, CONCAT LL is organising a workshop, where we will be uniting top scientists, leading Catalan organisations and companies, and other key stakeholders to tackle the pressing challenges of Catalonian agriculture. The workshops, and all ongoing CONCAT LL projects, embrace 1) 🙌authentic collaboration, 2) 🤝 Shared Agendas, 3) 🚜decentralised monitoring and assessment, and support the EU funded project Eco-Ready, which aims to promote sustainable practices and innovation in agriculture across Europe.     Introducing CONCAT LL - Collaborative mONitoring and Climate AdapTation: Living Lab for enhancing the resilience of agriculture in Catalonia, Spain! 🇪🇸 Chosen through the ECO-READY Open Call process, CONCAT LL is dedicated to addressing climate change challenges in the Mediterranean and South Western European Regions. With a focus on key agricultural products like poultry, apples, wheat, olive oil, and aquaculture, CONCAT LL aims to accelerate R&D in climate change mitigation and enhance agricultural resilience. This multidisciplinary Living Lab, supported by IRTA, Federació de Cooperatives Agràries de Catalunya, and Naked Innovations, combines expertise in research, innovation, and sustainability.     🚜 With agriculture being one of the largest sources of CO2 emissions, it is one of the main culprits for carbon increasing in our atmosphere and decreasing in our soils. However, there is an opportunity to turn this around and use farming as a carbon sink. The FAO agrifood roadmap (pictured) highlights several carbon-producing domains that can be: 1. Targeted to reduce net emissions from the global agrifood system (top) 2. Used as carbon sinks (bottom). (Source: FAO, COP28, 2023). So how can we ensure these domains act as carbon sinks? By enhancing the natural processes that draw and convert CO2 into soil carbon. 4 methods we can apply are: 🌿 1. No-till or zero-till agriculture: eliminate tilling practices that break up the soil and release CO2 into the atmosphere. 🌱 2. Grow cover crops alongside the main crop: instead of manually pulling up or poisoning weeds, which break root structure and its soil carbon contribution. 🌾3. Enhanced weathering: adding inorganic or mineral carbon to agriculture soils that interact chemically with CO2 in the atmosphere to form carbonates in the soil. 🌲4. Agroforestry: Integrating trees into farming systems sequesters carbon and offers additional benefits like windbreaks and shade. There are still some challenges such as measurement difficulties and adoption barriers, however there is a significant potential impact. Next steps? Exploring scalable methods, enhancing adoption and increasing effectiveness of soil carbon sequestration practices.     One of the greatest things about being part of Norrsken Barcelona is the community our team has access to. With various events, workshops and networking opportunities, our ecosystem expands to a wide range of other sustainability and climate experts, passionate about the same things we are. A few weeks ago, some of the team joined ClimateU for their Climate Drinks event. Not only was this a great opportunity as a business to expand our horizons, but also for our individual team members to develop further their knowledge and network in climate.
