Media & PR Expert | Former TV Journalist | Founder - The Media Masters Academy | Teaching women led businesses how to grow using the media and leveraging FREE PR.
Some observations about IWD... I did the rounds of several incredible International Women's Day events last week with amazing guest speakers like Melissa Browne, Dr Kristy Goodwin, CSP and Tory Archbold and I met so many smart, savvy, interesting women who are leaders in so many different kinds of industries from science to real estate, banking and wine. While chatting to these women, networking and making new friends, my immediate impression was they were whip smart, successful and confident. Yet I was struck by the amount of 'not good enoughness' I noticed as soon as I shared what I do for a living. As soon as I uttered the words...I'm a former journo turned Media and PR coach for women in business the first response was: ️ "Wow! That's amazing! I could never pitch myself to the media" OR ️ (laughing...) "I need someone like you to help me....because I'm terrible at selling myself." ️ Or as one senior executive from a large commercial real estate company said to me...'I get asked all the time to speak at work and industry events, but I always turn them down. I'm too worried about what people will think of me up there on stage talking about myself.' Not surprisingly, the most recent data available on the representation of women in the media supports this sentiment: ☝️ In a 2018 article by journalist Angela Priestley in Women's Agenda, recent studies showed that of 6000 newsprint articles by the Women’s Leadership Institute of Australia in 2016, just one in five sources quoted were female. ☝️In political related articles, women accounted for 20% of sources quoted. ☝️In business media, it was 15% and in finance, just 13%. An even more recent study published in Australia in February 2023 revealed the startling underrepresentation of women in media coverage, both as sources and experts in the news remains alive and well. The Women in Media Gender Scorecard found men still made up more than 70 per cent of quoted sources in the print media alone. So what can you do about that and why does it matter? As a woman in business, even if sometimes it doesn’t feel like it, we’re all leaders in some capacity. Whether you’re a side-hustler, solopreneur, have a small team, or run a large company, as women in leadership positions, it’s our responsibility to rock that media boat. By understanding how the media works and how valuable it is to us, our businesses, and our industries, we can help move the dial and get more women in business featured in the media. As women, we need to get comfortable with self-promotion, sharing our stories, our trials and our success and overcoming that all-to-common imposter syndrome to level the playing field in the traditional media. Media exposure also helps women gain more investment opportunities, speaking engagements, improves brand awareness and builds the reputation of women across a variety of industries becoming experts in their field.
