🌈 Safeguarding Children with Disabilities: A Call to Action in Education 🌟 Every child deserves a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment, especially children with disabilities. It's crucial that we, as educators, parents, and community members, work together to ensure that safeguarding measures are not only in place but effectively implemented. Let's educate ourselves and others about the unique challenges faced by children with disabilities and actively promote their rights to protection and equal opportunities. Awareness and understanding are key to preventing discrimination and abuse. We must advocate for comprehensive policies, accessible resources, and ongoing training that empower all children to thrive. By fostering an environment of empathy, respect, and inclusion, we can make a significant difference in the lives of children with disabilities. Join us in making education a safe haven for every child. 📚💖 https://lnkd.in/eBQyUAHb #SafeguardingChildren #DisabilityAwareness #InclusiveEducation

This week is Mencap's Learning Disability Week 😊 This year’s theme is centred around ‘Do you see me?’ - a reminder that people with learning disabilities need to be seen, heard and valued. A number of the children who visit us at Swings & Smiles have a learning disability. The level of support a child with a learning disability may require will vary from child to child, but we’re here to make sure every child can experience the joys of play no matter what their needs might be. It’s so important that we give children with learning disabilities spaces where they are understood and valued as individuals. By creating an accessible space where they can be themselves, we can build their confidence and interpersonal skills. Last year, almost 70,000 children with disabilities were awarded Florida's Family Empowerment Scholarship for Unique Abilities. Most of those children were placed in private schools where their rights to special education were reduced or very limited compared to public schools. This overview explains the implications for special education rights and protections when children with disabilities are placed in private schools and how parents may safeguard their children's rights to the educational services they need before enrolling them. #FESUA #FloridaEmpowermentScholarship #SpecialEducation #SpecialEducationAdvocacy

Today, on the first #InternationalDayOfPlay, I am excited to share a video from Perkins School for the Blind focusing on playful learning for children with disabilities. What does a child with disabilities need to learn to play? Likely, toys and materials they can access and adults with specialized teaching skills to help with exploration, communication, and decision-making. Let's remember today that there is more than one way to play! 🎈🎉 Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/e2ANrk56

Specific learning disability (SLD) is the most common eligibility category through which students receive special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). School districts vary with the methods and criteria used to determine if a child has a learning disability. It’s important to understand what method your school district uses if you suspect your child has a learning disability.

Did you know 2.41 million students in the U.S. battle with learning disabilities? Yet, our education system often fails to meet their specific needs adequately. This isn't just an oversight—it's a call to action. Our #LDDayofAction represents a movement demanding substantial reforms. Key initiatives like the RISE Act and the Keeping All Students Safe Act aim to dismantle the outdated barriers these students face daily. These laws are necessary steps toward building a truly inclusive educational system. Let’s not just accommodate our students with learning disabilities—let's uplift them. By supporting these initiatives, we can create a more inclusive learning environment for all students. Learn more and get involved!
