Happy World PR Day! It's a day to celebrate the rollercoaster ride that is the world of Public Relations. Let me share my journey, a tale that involves a leap of faith, a lot of luck, and a dash of destiny. As a software engineering grad with zero PR experience and a master's in Public Relations (yes, quite the pivot), there I was, nervously hitting send on an internship application to four PR firms in Mumbai. Why? Because they had functional websites. Yep, that was my highly scientific selection process. Spoiler alert: only two replied. Enter The Other Circle PR & Marketing. Aakanksha Gupta one of the Founders, was so excited that someone from the US was applying to intern at their agency. For me, it was pure serendipity. I knew nothing about PR, had no connections in the field, and was venturing into the unknown. But hey, that’s where all great stories begin, right? Fast forward to my first day. I was thrown into the deep end by my then-manager, Dhaval Raval. Me, a newbie paddling furiously, guided patiently by Dhaval, who probably had the patience of a saint. Somehow, I stayed afloat, learned the ropes, and now, over 7 years later, the permanent fixture that I am, I’m heading Business Development. Talk about a plot twist! Some might say it’s unwise to stay at one place for so long, but I say it’s the best decision I ever made. The Leo in me, ferociously loyal, never let me leave, and for good reason. I owe everything I know about PR to this incredible place. The culture, the people, the experiences – they’ve all shaped me. I’m proud to say that this is the only job I’ve held. So here’s to Anuraag Gupta, Aakanksha Gupta, Dhaval Raval and the entire team at The Other Circle - Nehaa K., Alita D'souza, Durgesh Goswami Prathmesh Chavan, Shaminaz Lokhandwala, Darshana Shukul and everyone else. People of PR: what questions do you ask when you're interviewing entry-level staff? For more senior roles, it's fairly straightforward, as you chat a lot about experience, what they feel they excel at, how they approached things, etc., etc. But for entry-level staff, it's a little bit harder. What we tend to look for is an understanding of PR, what news is, and the basics of how to write. Beyond that, if they're organised and enthusiastic, we can teach them. So we ask: 🤔 Why do you want to work in PR? 🤔 What is your understanding of the difference between PR and advertising? 🤔 How does a PR agency serve its clients? 🤔 What makes a good news story? 🤔 What are your strengths and weaknesses? 🤔 What types of clients do you want to work with? Resource Candidate was hired. Back to back interviews were lined up. I interviewed many candidates. But couldn't find the appropriate one. Then a girl came with her resume. She seemed confident. I asked many questions and she answered all of them very patiently. How did you prepare for the interview? to which she replied " I focused on learning practical skills, worked on my skills and also did mock interviews with my peers. It helped me gain confidence. " I was quite impressed with the technique. When I looked at her resume, to my surprise it was very basic. It seemed so basic but her performance and presence of mind was amazing. She got some real skills. And she was selected. From this one thing I learnt, hard work, marks and skills do not go at par. If you have practical knowledge and you have worked on your skills, you can face any interview. So if you are a candidate with less expertise, then don't worry with the knowledge of practical skills you can also perform well at the interview. And for all the HRs out there, All of us also learn something or the other from the candidates. In giving opportunity to a less skilled people but ready to grow with the company and open to learn, then there’s no harm. Everyone deserves a chance. Observation in the market: Recruiting Junior roles at the moment has never been more challenging: Why? Juniors for the first time have a really clear expectations/boundaries when it comes to work, they need to align with the values of the organisation, it needs to have flexibility, purpose and pays well. If you are a company that thinks just posting a job you are going to get a ton of Juniors applying- think again. To give you context, I know a company that has been looking for a social media executive for almost 2 months- Why? Because the requirement is 5 days in the office. If you are struggling with a Junior- have you considered a part-time more senior hire? #creativenatives

Social media managers are not digital marketers! I don’t understand why hiring managers think that social media managers are digital marketers. I applied to a company for a social media manager position. They called me for an interview, and during the interview, they said that I would have to run Facebook, Instagram, and Google ads, manage social media platforms, create content calendars, and handle Google Analytics and social media platform insights for pages and posts. And for all of this, they offered just 25k. I was so surprised to hear this from them, especially since such a professional company could make such an offer. Social media managers and digital marketers are two separate positions, so please don’t lump them together. If you expect someone to handle all of these tasks, at least offer a higher salary package.
