Good Sharing by Hamid. I have been doing RSR analysis since the late 80s. It has progressed from removing failed members during linear analysis in jacket structure upto plastic collapse as computing and softwares progressed. Assessed all available software at that time, and finally collaborate with Dave Garland from EDI developing SACS COLLAPSE based of Prof Bob Bea paper. Reason being, only SACS has the capability of modeling the non linear soil at that time. Most of the platform RSR is limited by the soil or pile failure. One can see that the jacket is very robust with many members, while the foundation is made up of usually 3, or 4 piles. Bigger structure with more piles will usually have a higher RSR.

Dynamic Time History Analysis for Fixed Offshore Platforms One of the challenges in the structural integrity assessment of existing platforms is to determine the DAF value, especially where the platform’s natural period is higher than 3 seconds after all brownfield modification and/or structural deterioration is considered. In this case, it is required to perform dynamic analysis.   As per API RP 2A, for structural natural periods above 3 s, dynamic amplification is important, particularly for the lower sea states that may contribute the most to long-term fatigue damage. In these cases, it is recommended to perform a dynamic wave analysis to get the structural response accurately.    One of the advantages of USFOS that I like is that it allows you to perform a dynamic time history analysis with full pile and soil included in the model. The maximum loads generated as per Maximum Overturning Moment (OTM), or Base Shear (BS) can be then recalled to perform a pushover analysis and derive the platform's Reserve Strength Ratio (RSR).    Below is an illustration of the dynamic analysis performed in USFOS as part of the structural integrity assessment for a four-legged jacket. #StructuralIntegrityAssessment #OffshorePlatform #DynamicTimeHistoryAnalysis #DynamicAmplificationFactorDAF #USFOS

What can help improve the ultimate strength of an existing offshore platform? Here is a tip that helps the structure reach a higher reserve strength and pass the target RSR. The structural Integrity (Ultimate Strength) of an offshore platform is mainly assessed by performing a nonlinear pushover analysis (Both SACS and USFOS can perform the analysis, I would prefer USFOS). Generally, a SACS model is available for an existing platform. This SACS model is converted to USFOS model to establish a nonlinear pushover analysis. As a normal practice, what has been used as “Yield Strength” in SACS models for steel material is “Nominal Yield Strength” which is the best for static design and re-analysis. However, when it comes to “Integrity Assessment” and nonlinear analysis to estimate the ultimate capacity/reserve strength of an offshore platform, API RP 2 SIM allows using “Mean Yield Strength” instead of “Nominal Yield Strength”. In more accurate words, when adequate data is available, the actual (coupon test or mill certification) or mean yield strength may be used instead of nominal yield strength.  Be careful, “mean yield strength” should not be used when it is greater than “actual strength”. As per API RP 2SIM, the mean yield strength for 248 MPa (36 ksi) steel is estimated to be 276 MPa (40 ksi) to 317 MPa (46 ksi), with 296 MPa (43 ksi) being a reasonable average. #StructuralIntegrityAssessment #OffshorePlatform #PushoverAnalysis #APIRP2SIM #NauticMiddleEast

Very useful information especially following the decision made by Wellington City Council on its proposed District Plan. Whilst the plan enables development (and much more than intended or required) there are other ingredients required such as building resilience requirements, building costs and compliance and increasing insurance costs. To build an affordable home, you need much more than a plan.

Smoke engineering control can be performed with prescriptive calculation to BS7346 or to NFPA92 method. The following slide just lined up the steps to be taken when undertaking the calculation. There are many constraints to size and depth of smoke reservoir in BS7346 but NFPA92 seems to be quite silent on it. Even if you want to do performance base smoke control using CFD calculations or zone smoke control using program like CFAST, it would be advisable to start of with prescriptive calculation to determine the extraction rate and use the extraction rate to perform the CFD. Then you can gradually lower the extraction rate in the simulation until you reach the minimum smoke layer base height or any other limiting criterias in accordance to the objective of your smoke control. Moreover, it generates detailed electronic records regarding the location, length, and depth of the detected cracks. This information is crucial for making informed decisions about asset integrity and optimizing repairs.
