A WORRY! AGAIN! For the second consecutive year, a fossil fuel-dependent petro-state is set to host the crucial UN climate talks. The Cop29 summit in Azerbaijan, announced by President Ilham Aliyev, raises concerns as its organizing committee consists of 28 men and zero women, posing a setback to gender parity efforts in climate leadership. I strongly advocate for equal representation in governing climate talks, recognizing that climate change impacts the entire world, not just a portion of it. #genderequality #climatechange #climatetalks https://lnkd.in/dZpmfzg5

As a female, climate change SME, I’m disgusted at this regressive decision by Azerbaijan. With attitudes like this, it’s no wonder women are still fighting for parity in terms of pay and recognition in STEM roles. It seems you’re quite behind on your climate action, Azerbaijan. Do you want me to come and give you a hand?! #climateaction #climatecrisis #COP29 #equality #womeninscience #azerbaijan

“Multilevel climate action is the most effective catalyzer to bridge communities and the real economy across the world to national climate plans” At today’s Opening Plenary of the SB60, Karishma Asarpota, ICLEI’s Climate Action Officer delivered a powerful statement on behalf of the LGMA Constituency. She underscored the critical importance of multilevel climate action in addressing the climate emergency, celebrating the COP28 outcomes that have endorsed this approach. Full statement 👉 https://lnkd.in/e_Sv3GVR A key highlight is the CHAMP Initiative for multilevel NDCs, which has already received support from 72 nations, aiming for implementation by 2025. This initiative represents a significant step towards integrating local and regional actions with national climate plans. The LGMA has been actively engaged in fostering this momentum through various global forums, including dialogues in Belém, Berlin, Copenhagen, Nairobi, Paris, Riga, and Washington. However, the success of these efforts hinges on robust financial support. The LGMA urged nations to increase their domestic and international financial contributions to sustain this critical work. #ClimateAction #MultilevelAction #Sustainability #CHAMPInitiative #SB60 #ICLEI #LGMA #UNFCCC

Let’s advocate for equitable representation and funding for African youth at COP29 and beyond. What initiatives are you involved in that support this cause? Share in the comments! Did you know that over 90% of African youth are seeking funding to attend COP29 in Baku, yet many are being overlooked? With over 60% of Africa’s population under 25, it’s crucial that our young leaders are present at this pivotal climate conference. As a young advocate in climate action, I' have witnessed the incredible passion and innovative solutions that my peers bring to the table. Yet, without financial support, many are unable to contribute to discussions that directly affect their futures. This exclusion is not just an oversight; it’s a massive missed opportunity for progress. We need to change this narrative! Here’s how we can make a difference: Ensure young leaders have the resources to share their insights and solutions at COP29. Together, we can raise our voices and demand the change our planet needs! #COP29 #YouthInClimate #ClimateAction #AfricanYouth #Sustainability #Inclusion #ClimateFinance #YouthEmpowerment

Absolutely unbelievable to see this happening in 2024... But how do you respond to such an outrageous act? With grace as SHE Changes Climate's response clearly shows: “This [committee] is a regressive step in the journey towards gender parity in climate; but there is still time for change. We ask for equal representation in the governance of this year’s climate talks, because climate change affects the whole world, not half of it.” #COP29 #GenderEquality https://lnkd.in/dgz83FEs

🌍 **Exciting News!** 🌍 In a landmark moment at the United Nations Summit of the Future, the Iswe Foundation and partners launched the first iteration of the Citizens’ Assembly for People and Planet in September 2024. This marks a bold step towards empowering communities and amplifying the voices of citizens to drive change independently of traditional multilateral negotiations, with the backing from non-state actors, including civil society, faith groups, and local governments. With the strong support of the Brazilian government, the Global Citizens’ Assembly will connect with COP30 in Belém, paving the way for meaningful climate action on both local and global scales. 🌱 Key highlights from the launch event included powerful insights from: Ana Toni, Vice Minister for Climate Change (Brazil) Laurence Tubiana CEO of the European Climate Foundation & key architect of the Paris Agreement Together, they called for an assembly that would not only chart a collective path forward but reimagine our politics by bringing citizens into the heart of global governance. 👉 For more updates leading up to COP30 and beyond, sign up for the Coalition for a Global Citizen's Assembly mailing list. As the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee #INC 4 in Canada approaches, the pressing question arises: Can we genuinely say we can have an inclusive and impactful vision promised by the #plastictreaty, or do these remain mere buzzwords? ⏱️ Another session of the United Nations Environment Assembly #UNEA is drawing to a close, and the world eagerly anticipates its outcomes. UNEA, as a pivotal platform, pledges to bridge the gap between humanity and nature, aiming to enhance the livelihoods of the most vulnerable communities globally. The Youth Climate Ambassadors Programme (YCAP) conducted their first virtual dialogue with our guest speaker, Espen Ronneberg, the Climate Change Adviser at the Pacific Community (SPC). He shared his past work in climate change advocacy by highlighting that there had been significant growth in agenda items in climate change forums and discussions which is a positive progress. There has been more youth’s engagement, contributing to gender balance in the Pacific. Mr Espen also shared his knowledge and experience gained throughout his careers. He highlighted that climate change drastically affects the Pacific communities and therefore, all nations need to discuss on trustable actions that they will take to combat them. Countries are already on the edge of 1.5 degrees Celsius however, it can only be solved if nations work together and form policies and interventions. Mr. Espen highlighted that during COP, it has been emphasized that sea level rise can be controlled if all countries switch 100% renewable energy. The major challenge for delegates was finding difficult to convince powerful leaders of high carbon emitting countries since they have strong political connections. It was revealed that climate change delegates were trying to convince countries such as US, EU countries, Canada, Japan and came to realize that more focus should be centralized to include other larger emitting countries such as China, Turkey, G20 countries (that contributes to larger carbon emissions). Mr. Espen shared that COP has a very busy agenda therefore agenda items from Pacific delegation does not get enough attention and time. This creates a challenge for Pacific delegation/other small island states since there aren’t expert delegates from Island states. Thus, the major takeaways from the session are that climate change issues can be solved by collective actions and inclusion from all nations rather than sole dependency on single countries. Mr. Espen also shared insights of how a day in the COP is like and encouraged all the YCAP scholars to manage time wisely, engage and network with lots of experts and leaders if selected to attend the upcoming COP 29. These key learnings will enable me build time management and networks skills for future forums and workshops allowing me to develop into a better, strong and disciplined individual. I would like to thank, Mr. Espen Ronneberg, and Alliance for Future Generations - Fiji for the insightful dialogue and allowing Pacific youth leaders to engage and acquire learnings from experts. #ycap2024 #afgfiji #youthclimateambassadorsprogram
