The Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) Constituency have united around three clear asks for climate negotiators for the next climate conference in Baku. Learn more and download the joint position, along with supporting documents, here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eQCgAAgx As implementation partners to the #ParisAgreement, local and other subnational governments - in collaboration with the LGMA Constituency - are committed to supporting the development, financing, and execution of ambitious NDCs and other key strategies leading up to 2025. For COP29 Azerbaijan, the #LGMA has three main asks: 1️⃣ Accelerate inclusive, multilevel, gender-responsive and cooperative action, through new Nationally Determined Contributions developed in partnership with local and other subnational governments. 2️⃣ Finance sustainable urbanization and climate action at all levels. 3️⃣ Align the climate, nature, pollution and sustainable development agendas. COP28 UAE underscored the critical role of #MultilevelAction and local governments in driving global climate goals, celebrating breakthroughs like the #CHAMP initiative and the first-ever Local Climate Action Summit. Yet, despite this significant progress, local and other subnational governments are still sounding the alarm over the world’s path toward the SDGs and the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target. We invite all key stakeholders and local and other subnational governments to endorse the position by 31 October. The complete list of endorsers will be announced on 11 November at the LGMA #COP29 Press Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. Learn more and download it here: https://lnkd.in/e4bYqJ-E Taking place on 26 October, this one-day Summit, an official high-level parallel event to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP16 Colombia (21 Oct - 1 Nov), will bring together governors, mayors, subnational leaders, and key global stakeholders to collaborate with national leaders on #BiodiversityAction, focusing on three core themes: 🤝 PARTNERING / Session 1 Bridging the biodiversity finance gap: Partnering for nature 📈 PROGRESS / Session 2 Whole-of-government solutions: Showcasing implementation progress made in urban and territorial action for biodiversity 🕊️ PEACE / Session 3 Living in harmony & making peace with nature: Sharing innovative practices The #8thSummitCOP16 is co-hosted by ICLEI, UN Biodiversity Secretariat, City of Cali, Colombian Ministry of Environment & Sustainable Development, and Regions4. We’d like to thank our sponsors CAF -banco de desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe- and co-sponsors DAI and Veolia for helping to make this Summit possible. Over the past two decades, ICLEI, through our Cities Biodiversity Center (CBC), has collaborated closely with the United Nations Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Biodiversity COP host countries and cities, and our key partners, such as Regions4 and UN Environment Programme, to elevate the voice of local and subnational governments at the Biodiversity Conference of the Parties (COP), ensuring that strong action is taken to create vibrant cities and regions, where people and biodiversity can thrive. This collaboration has not only resulted in global summits for the local and subnational government constituency, as official parallel events at the COPs, but also a seat and voice in the negotiations. This has led to the adoption of more than 20 Decisions recognizing cities and regions contributions to the CBD and global biodiversity targets, including a dedicated Decision providing for a multilevel governance mechanism and plan of action on engaging subnational governments and cities. We are looking forward to seeing you in Cali! CitiesWithNature & RegionsWithNature

"How many times have you asked your child, 'What do you think about climate change?'” This was the question posed by Júlia Bonitese, an 11-year-old Brazilian Children’s Ambassador for Climate Justice and Environmental Activist, at the closing of the ICLEI World Congress 2024 last June in São Paulo, Brazil. She continued: “If adults see us as agents of change, start by including us in the conversation and decision-making. Let's work together toward a less consumerist and more sustainable future — across all generations. Otherwise, we are all contributing to our own extinction." Today, we highlight Júlia's timely message as we celebrate #WorldHabitatDay. Under the theme "Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban Future," this day reminds us that as our world rapidly urbanizes, cities are becoming home to a new generation of leaders and changemakers. As stated today by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, "Let us support youth everywhere, include young people in decision-making, and build cities where people of all ages can thrive." #ICLEI joins the UN's call to action, urging the next generation to step up and lead, as they are the driving force behind sustainable urban development. Júlia is the founder of Pequenos Protetores do Planeta, an initiative to unite youth across Brazil to protect its rich biodiversity, especially the Amazon region, and she attended ICLEI’s World Congress to amplify the voice of youth in #ClimateAction. You can watch Julia’s intervention at the closing plenary: https://lnkd.in/esk2nGCn In the picture below, Júlia Bonitese, together with Rodrigo Ravena, Secretary of the Environment, City of São Paulo, Brazil; ICLEI President Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, Mayor of Malmö, Sweden; and ICLEI Secretary General Gino Van Begin at the #ICLEIWorldCongress 2024. #WHD2024 #UrbanOctober UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme)
