Title: Unveiling Insights: Women in Data Science Kenya Event on Exploring AI's Role in Healthcare Yesterday,I had the privilege of attending an enlightening event organized by Women in Data Science (WiDS) Kenya where the theme of equity in healthcare took center stage. The discussions were deeply inspiring, especially witnessing the articulate insights shared by the women panelists. As we celebrated International Women's Day, one particular message from panelist Nelly Nyaga resonated profoundly with me. She reminded us that the origins of International Women's Day trace back to 1911, a time when women were courageously fighting for equity, including the right to vote and have their voices heard. Nelly's words served as a reminder that we are the embodiment of those dreams, and it is our responsibility to carry forward their aspirations for a more equitable world. During the event, one topic that particularly intrigued me was the revolutionary role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, especially in predictive medication. The idea that one medicine could potentially work universally, rather than prescribing specific medications based on individual genetic makeup, is a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery. It underscores the importance of leveraging technology to ensure equitable access to healthcare for all. However, amidst the promising advancements in medical science, a story that struck a chord with me was that of Henrietta Lacks. Her cervical cells, harvested without her consent in 1951, have since been replicated infinitely and have contributed immensely to medical research. Despite Henrietta Lacks' cells paving the way for groundbreaking medical discoveries, the reality remains stark: some women of color continue to face disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. This serves as a poignant wake-up call, reminding us of the urgent need to empower marginalized communities and address systemic inequalities within our healthcare systems. As we reflect on the discussions and insights shared at the Women in Data Science Kenya event, let us recommit ourselves to the pursuit of equity in healthcare. Let us harness the power of data science and technology to drive meaningful change, ensuring that healthcare is accessible, inclusive, and equitable for all. In celebrating International Women's Day and beyond, may we continue to advocate for equity in healthcare, and honor the legacies of trailblazers like Henrietta Lacks. Together, let us strive towards a future where healthcare is a universal right, not a privilege. #WomenInDataScience #HealthcareEquity #InternationalWomensDay

South African government and businesses have to start exploring modern data solutions in order to keep up with the rest of the world. Automated data collection and modern Warehousing technologies can drastically improve reliability of data as well as reduce costs/risks associated with owning data.
In his latest article for the Business Day newspaper, Tregter co-founder Ferdinand Steenkamp discusses how the 2022 Census in South Africa has sparked significant debate since its release, with concerns surrounding the accuracy of the data. "Nearly 20 million people were reportedly not counted, leading the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) to describe the census as an estimate rather than a credible enumeration. With population data central to resource allocation, provinces like the Western Cape may face budget cuts of up to R7 billion, affecting vital services like education” shares Steenkamp. The SA Innovation Summit last week offered a significant opportunity to discuss solutions for improving data collection and digitalisation, especially as the National Data and Cloud Policy aims to enhance big data management across the country. "The future of South Africa’s data systems, including local vs. international control of data centres, remains a critical conversation. Without accurate data, effective decision-making becomes impossible. It's essential that we embrace digitalisation and local data storage solutions to safeguard our future" concludes Steenkamp. Innovation and collaboration will play a key role in paving the way for a more accurate, data-driven future. UNICEF’s Annual State of Digital Transformation report for 2024 has been published, citing the importance of maintaining “momentum on the inclusion of children in digital transformation”, and highlighting progress and key aims around AI, gender and tech, cybersecurity and children’s health data. Three projects or areas where progress has been made are in the co-development of a “global yet adaptable toolkit” with vaccine alliance Gavi; the HealthConnekt/PHC Digital Infrastructure initiative in Zambia working on infrastructure and education to support sustainable digital transformation; and in the development of NutriDash, a system that “collates and analyses nutrition data from programmes across 125 countries”.
