Step behind the scenes with us… What happened at the inaugural #ArmyDataSummit? Day 1 (yesterday) kicked off as the Army's Chief Data Officer, Dr. David Markowitz, highlighted many of the Army’s enduring data challenges. But there are many initiatives at play to address these, leading to presentations on pressing topics like: 💡 The importance of #Semantic Data Layers, especially for #data at scale. They address the data structures and deliver key semantics, like why the data was collected and data governance (see this in action with a demo of our flagship #sKG product. Link in comments!) 📈 The Army taking the time to understand the data and ensure the data is correct 🔧 The need for tools that are interoperable and can be integrated with our systems ⚡️ The need for tools that answer immediate questions. We don’t want Common Operating Pictures…if we’re determining where our #supplychain could be disrupted, we need to be able to answer that in advance. And here's a highlight from a great Day 2 🫡 #defensetech #knowledgegraphs

Exciting developments ahead as global navies and IBM collaborate to enhance fleet readiness using Watsonx. The German Navy's "Route 66" initiative aims for 66% operational readiness of ships and boats. By leveraging Generative AI (GenAI) technology and SAP ERP Data, IBM's Watsonx can significantly improve the maintenance planning process. Drawing from the successful use of similar technologies by the US Navy, Watsonx utilizes SAP master data and various textual sources to identify damage characteristics and streamline repair planning. This approach not only boosts efficiency but also enhances the accuracy of pre-repair diagnostics, potentially reducing inspection phases by up to 37%. Excited to see how these innovations will transform naval operations worldwide! 🚢🔧🌐 #IBM #Watsonx #NavalReadiness #AI #GenerativeAI

I noted a comment in a group chat by a colleague earlier today that got the old grey matter itching, and had me thinking through how we manage parts in the Defence space (thanks Timothy Visser!). I'll preface this with the fact that I've been around NATO Stock Numbers (NSNs) going back to the old microfiche days in the early 90s, and know first-hand the many different ways an Item of Supply can be poorly (or even multiply) Codified and the many sustainment issues you can face as a result. If you're unfamiliar with NSNs and the NATO Codification Bureaus (NCB), Wiki has a great primer - https://lnkd.in/gAZBuKH6) and there's also the AC/135 page for some good info too - https://lnkd.in/gm7KZEne In the modern Supply Chain space, parts data and configuration management is obviously of chief importance. If you know what you have, where it is and how it's being used then you can rapidly react to changing sustainment needs and ensure support will be available when and where it's needed. Keeping that idea in mind, does the humble NSN and its supporting framework still have relevance in a data rich world or does our strict adherence to it stifle parts-based supply chain innovation? The NSN framework (at least on the face of it) It hasn't changed all that much since its evolution in the 1970s from the original Federal Stock numbers first formalised in 1955. We live in a data rich world and in a time where our capability development is coming at us at a rapid pace, and iterating through design faster than we've been used to. A key case in point is the development of Uncrewed Autonomous Capabilities that are stepping through their designs and prototyping into fielded, maintained equipment and systems faster than we can codify them. Speed to Capability is a great concept, but we need our data systems and supply chains to be able to keep up. Is it time for a change in this space? Interested to hear if anyone else has been having any thoughts on this. #NSN #supplychainmanagement #defenceindustry #defenceinnovation #datamanagement

Whenever I read something from Rémy Fannader, I always feel like I'm "drinking from a fire hose"! I'm currently on page 35 of his book, "Enterprise Architecture Fundamentals". The link below is a passage on his discussions on the Observation-Orientation-Decision-Action (OODA) Loop. The OODA Loop is a decision-making (DM) paradigm developed in the 1960s by Colonel John Boyd, based on his experience as a fighter pilot and military strategist. I like this quote from Remy: "Its [OODA Loop] renewed relevance for today’s operational DM comes from the correspondence between the seamless integration of IT systems with business processes, and fighter jets’ command and control processes." Indeed, the OODA Loop decision-making concept will have great relevance once (if and when) we close the Business-IT gap to achieve "the seamless integration of IT systems with business processes". https://lnkd.in/eHd8vebz
