As a mental health advocate, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of unspoken struggles—especially in the Black community. Today, I’m breaking the silence on the intersection of drug overdose and mental health, issues that continue to devastate lives while too often being overlooked. I also want to take a moment to honor the life of Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, whose passing reminds us of the urgency of these conversations. At The Confess Project Of America Official Page we’ve been fighting to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health and create safe spaces for real, honest dialogue. With drug overdose rates rising, especially in marginalized communities, it’s more critical than ever to address the mental health challenges, systemic barriers, and lack of resources that contribute to these tragedies. Let’s move forward by opening up these conversations and building support systems that foster healing and resilience. Commemorating Juneteenth: Reflecting on Freedom and Mental Health Frederick Douglass once asked, “What to a slave is the Fourth of July?” Today, we ask ourselves how the legacy of slavery continues to impact mental health in Black communities. Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, but it also reminds us of the generational trauma that still echoes through time. As we honor Juneteenth, we must also acknowledge the ongoing systemic racism and discrimination that Black people and other people of color face in our society. Racism and discrimination have a significant impact on mental health, and it is essential to recognize and address this issue. Understanding this history helps us to break the cycles of trauma. By fostering open dialogues and educating ourselves, we can support the mental health of directly impacted individuals and their allies. Depression in older Black womyn can have a different face due to culturally-sanctioned beliefs of life outcomes. But the fact is still the same, mental well-being is just as relevant as maintaining one’s physical health. The stigma associated with mental health and the notion that Black women are superheroes and can manage independently is stealing years and precious time that we “think” we have with our elders. Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) populations face unique systemic challenges when it comes to managing their mental health. July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness month, an opportunity to elevate the unique systemic challenges that Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) populations face when it comes to managing their mental health. Generational and historical trauma and displacement within a cycle of constant systemic racism and oppression are seemingly insurmountable barriers to thriving in life. Black Mental Health Canada launched a new program last summer called Self Care through Hair where they help train barbers and hairdressers to tackle the stigma and struggle of mental health in the #Black community. They empower barbers as trusted allies and first responders within the community, encouraging clients to share their thoughts openly. The training offered teaches them to engage in active listening, recognize trauma and distress and reduce stigma within their communities. And on an as needed basis, they also can refer to psychotherapists who have worked within the community previously. A 2020 Stats Canada survey highlighted that 27.9% of Black visible-minority respondents, compared to 22.9% of White respondents, reported fair/poor self-rated mental health. Also studies have shown that difficulty recognizing symptoms and lack of information about mental health impact the Black community negatively in Canada. It’s unique programs like these that can really help challenge the stigma and provide culturally-appropriate help to those in need. June is Men's Health Awareness Month! This month, we're shining a light on the importance of mental health, especially for Black men. Black men face unique challenges when it comes to mental wellness, from stigma and lack of culturally competent care to systemic barriers. It's time to break the silence, support one another, and promote healing within our community. In communities like Oakland, Black men face unique challenges that can contribute to higher rates of mental health issues. By raising awareness, providing support, and fostering open discussions, we can work towards breaking down the barriers that prevent Black men from seeking help and accessing the resources they need to thrive. For Black people, it's not just mental health. Studies have shown that the results of increased mental illness and related consequences for the Black community are stemmed from institutional injustices.
