In Northern Ghana, a research team led by the CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute seeks to revolutionize the agricultural landscape by developing the first-ever commercial variety of Bambara groundnuts. These versatile legumes, rich in nutrition, are poised to address the region’s chronic food insecurity while improving farmer’s livelihoods and incomes via a burgeoning international groundnut milk market. In addition to their resilience in drought conditions, Bambara groundnuts enhance soil fertility, making them a climate-resilient, regenerative crop. Grow Further will provide a grant of approximately $133,000 over 3 years to cover all research and development costs associated with the project. Agricultural extension and commercialization costs will primarily be borne by the Ministry of Agriculture and the private sector, respectively. Grow Further will also provide capacity building, particularly around monitoring and evaluation and marketing and communications. Led by researcher Alhassan Nuhu Jinbaani, the project takes a multi-pronged approach to empower smallholder farmers, especially women, and foster sustainable development through social science research on the traits farmers want, breeding, agronomy, and government and private-sector partnerships to develop seed markets. This project earned Grow Further a “Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils Champion” designation from the US State Department. 📣Soil health represents the ongoing ability of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that supports plants, animals, and human beings. The well-being of our soil is crucial for sustainable agriculture and food security. We had the honor of celebrating the official opening of the Soil Health and Fertilizer Hub at the IITA headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria 🇳🇬. Dr. Edet Ekong joined us and emphasized the critical importance of soil health in agriculture and African food security. The Regional Hub for Fertilizer and Soil Health for West Africa and the Sahel was established to provide technical assistance for developing and implementing investment plans in fertilizer and soil health, driven by the needs of individual countries across the region. It focuses on improving soil health and fertility through best agronomic practices, enhancing resource efficiency, building climate resilience, and conducting capacity building at various levels #Fertilizer #SoilFertility #SoilHealth #FSHHubLaunch #WestAfrica #Sahel ECOWAS Commission International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) UM6P - Mohammed VI Polytechnic University The World Bank (Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project) International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Africa faces a problem of protien deficiency especially amongst children and mothers but this can be mitigated through innovative investment in poultry farming and also nutritional awareness. In the case of Nigeria where you find many consume lots of carbs, knowledge of the importance of protien in our diet must be imbibed to bring about the eradication of protein deficiency from Africa and beyond. We can do this together. Let's feed Africa 🌍 Let's growth African economy through Agribusiness. South Africa has become a significant player in global agriculture. Our country's horticulture and grains subsectors have significantly contributed to this success. Despite this progress, many South Africans still face food insecurity, although South Africa ranks as the most food-secure country in Sub-Saharan Africa in the global food security index #foodsecurity #agriculture #africa #southafrica (Image created with DALL-E)

A validation workshop and policy dialogue organized by the the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa - FARA, CSIR - Food Research Institute and the Department of Crop Science University of Ghana was held on 6th August 2024 at the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement Auditorium, University of Ghana, following a value chain analysis conducted on four indigenous crops (Okra, Garden eggs, Turkey Berry, and Cocoyam leaves) in Ghana. A key objective of the project: Enhancing the production and consumption of Indigenous fruits and vegetables to improve nutrition in Ghana and Mali; funded by Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Horticulture is to address structural and systemic challenges, harness opportunities along the value chains, and identify potential policies for the prioritization of Indigenous vegetable value chains. The principal investigator of the project Gloria Essilfie emphasized the need to focus on indigenous crops owing to their high nutritional value. The 4R Project in Senegal has introduced innovative soil fertility management practices, which addressed poor soil conditions and significantly boosted agricultural productivity. By combining organic and inorganic fertilizers, we've seen improved soil health and increased crop yields. 10,705 farmers have adopted these practices, resulting in better food security and economic outcomes. This revolution in soil fertility management is a model for sustainable agriculture in Senegal and beyond. We thank our partners, including the National Agency for Agricultural and Rural Development, for their crucial role in this achievement. #SoilFertility #4RProject #SenegalFarming
