In a bid to enhance food security and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa, the Root, Tuber, and Banana (RTB) Breeding Network has officially been established, bringing together 18 National Agricultural Research and Extension Systems (NARES) and Universities, and two CGIAR centers - International Potato Center (CIP) and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). The initiative, supported by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation aims to significantly accelerate genetic gains in key staple crops, including banana, cassava, potato, sweetpotato, and yam. International Potato Center (CIP) and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) will play facilitation roles, supporting the NARES in their leadership and breeding efforts. This week, IITA hosted the Society for Underutilized Legumes (SUL) during its 6th International Conference and Stakeholders Meeting. The gathering which had key stakeholders and young and renowned researchers convening at our Ibadan headquarters for three days, was an enabling environment for participants to discuss critical issues around underutilized crops and food systems. There were research presentations and exhibitions geared towards highlighting efforts around underutilized crops while participants were able to initiate collaborations that will shape the future of #underutilizedcrops and food security. . 🚨 Exciting Update from My Trip to China 🚨 From October 9-12, I participated in the 2024 World AgriFood Innovation Conference (WAFI) in Beijing. The conference provided a fantastic platform for IITA and the CGIAR, where we highlighted our work in food security, climate resilience, and youth agribusiness, drawing attention to key initiatives like Aflasafe™. During the visit, I signed on behalf of IITA an important MoU with China Agricultural University (CAU) to enhance collaboration in crop breeding, biotechnology, and digital agriculture. I also had fruitful discussions with the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) on joint projects in banana breeding and cassava seed propagation. A big thank you to Dr. Shenggen Fan, Ismahane Elouafi, and Lindiwe Sibanda for their leadership and support, which made this trip a success! Looking forward to sharing more details at the upcoming Board Meeting. 🌍🌱 #Agriculture #Partnerships #Innovation #IITA #WAFI2024

The CSIR-CROPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CRI) recently organized a training program for seed yam out-growers, focusing on proper planting techniques and best agronomic and management practices in seed yam production. This initiative was held under the Yam Component of the Program for Seed System for Vegetatively Propagated Crops in Africa (PROSSIVA) project in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). The objective of the training program was to engage and train seed entrepreneurs as yam vine uptakers (outgrowers) for an increased proportion of improved seed available in yam production chain. Honored to deliver today the keynote address at the World Food Day 2024 event, hosted by the University of Hohenheim. Special thanks to Professor Regina Birner for the invitation and congratulations to my esteemed colleague Dr. Agnes Kalibata on receiving the Justus-von-Liebig Award for World Nutrition! This year’s World Food Day, along with the International Day of Rural Women, reminds us of the critical link between women, food production, and global nutrition. In Africa, where 282 million people face food insecurity—aggravated by climate change—the need for science-driven solutions is urgent. At CGIAR and IITA, I’ve witnessed how innovative research can transform agri-food systems to tackle hunger, support smallholder farmers, and boost climate resilience. From climate-smart agriculture to partnerships with African governments and research institutions, we are laying the foundation for a more food-secure future. It’s time for coordinated action, investment in sustainable agricultural solutions, and empowering the next generation of farmers. Let’s work together to close the hunger and nutrition gap, ensuring a sustainable future for all. #WorldFoodDay #FoodSecurity #ClimateChange #SustainableAgriculture #RuralWomen #IITA #CGIAR #Innovation #Africa

"To strengthen and enrich the financing support for the green and low carbon transition of food systems, we need to think strategically about new ways, new mechanisms for financing, low carbon in the transition." Simeon Ehui, Director General of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), said in an interview with 21st Century Business Herald during the 2024 World Agrifood Innovation Conference held in Pinggu, Beijing. Simeon Ehui pointed out that the current banking and financial systems are not adequate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and more resources are needed to be invested in the field of mitigating climate change. Transitions in various sectors, including agriculture and energy, all require significant funding. Read:https://lnkd.in/gAbkhzMU
