Cultivating change through collaboration! IFDC is happy to announce the Soil Values program, funded by the Netherlands Directorate-General for International Cooperation (DGIS), aiming to improve the soil fertility and productive capacity of 2 million hectares of farmland in the Sahel region for a brighter agricultural future in the Sahel region. Soil Values will operate through three strategic pathways: 1. Agro-ecological pathway: Targeting practices for smallholder farmers within landscape elements. 2. Inclusive market development pathway: Engaging the private sector to provide market incentives for soil fertility management. 3. Enabling environment pathway: Aligning public sector institutions, policies, and governance structures to stimulate sustainable soil fertility management. Soil health assessments in cacao farms in Colombia and Ecuador are ongoing in the context of the Clima-Loca project. Chemical, physical and biological indicators are measured, capturing multiple soil functions as affected by soil management and agroforestry designs. Preliminary findings show a trend toward positive impact on nutrient and carbon cycling of organic agriculture, and agroforestry when including leguminous trees. Monitoring changes in soil health indicators for multiple years is needed to effectively capture the effect of soil management practices or system designs on soil functioning. More sampling and measurements will follow in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in 2024. Salicrop's Breakthrough! We're thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our mission to combat land degradation and soil salinity. Salicrop has successfully grown tomatoes on marginal land in the Jordan Valley, Israel, despite challenging conditions of high soil salinity (35 EC) and elevated boron levels (2.6). Our innovative seed enhancement technology has overcome these extreme abiotic obstacles, delivering impressive results. Why This Matters: Land degradation and soil salinity are pressing global challenges, threatening food security and agricultural sustainability. By developing resilient crop solutions, we are contributing to the global effort to reclaim degraded lands and enhance food production. A special thank you to the Israel Innovation Authority רשות החדשנות and the Ministry of Agriculture משרד החקלאות ופיתוח הכפר | Israeli Ministry of Agriculture for their invaluable support in making this achievement possible. #Agriculture #Innovation #Sustainability #Salicrop #Agritech #SoilSalinity #FoodSecurity #LandDegradation Sharon Devir Ṛcā Godbole Oron Bet Or Matan Mire Israel Innovation Authority רשות החדשנות

Communication and support of development and transformation processes for a sustainable and resilient world of tomorrow
EU AGRICULTURAL OUTLOOK 2023-2035 COMPLETELY IGNORES POTENTIALS OF AGROFORESTRY The DG AGRI and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission have recently published their Agricultural Outlook for EU agricultural markets and income until the year 2035. This outlook is based on a set of macroeconomic assumptions including also a number of uncertainties regarding industrial, market & trade developments. However this medium-term outlook repesents - so said by its authors - the baseline for future analytical and scenario work. https://lnkd.in/e4XGfD-B But how can we develop proper scenarios for future farming practices adapting to climate change without considering agroforestry at any point? 🤔 There is no mention at all of the high potential of trees in agriculture to bind CO2, to regenerate soils for stable yields in the long term and much more. You can learn more about the high variety of benefits agroforestry provides for future European agriculture on the 7th European Agroforestry Conference taking place in Brno/CZ in May 2024. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eCnnN-pa As future outlook we definitely need more communication about & establishment of agroforestry systems as basement for regenerative & climate adapted agriculture in the EU! There will be definitely no plan B! 🤷♀️🌍🌳🌱👩🌾 #agroforestry #agriculture #europe #outlook #regenerativefarming #euraf2024 #euagri #cap #communication #climateadaption EU CAP Network European Agroforestry Federation (EURAF) Deutscher Fachverband für Agroforstwirtschaft (DeFAF) e.V. 🌳 👨🌾 #Agroforestry in Germany is moving forward, but is it enough? An insightful #poster shared by our German partners from the The University of Bonn during the #EURAF2024 conference reveals the details. 💚 2023 marked a milestone for agroforestry in Germany with the introduction of a legal definition and the launch of new funding opportunities, including a national subsidy of 200 €/ha for wooded areas through Eco Scheme 3. Yet, despite these advances, significant challenges remain. 😟 10 of 16 federal states offer investment support or subsidised consultancy, but the impact on profitability remains negligible. 😟Ambitious targets (65,000 ha by 2027) are at risk. 😟Inadequate funding, excessive bureaucracy, and restrictive definitions are among the major barriers that farmers face. 📊 Probabilistic modeling using a Decision Analysis approach confirms that current funding schemes do not significantly improve the Net Present Value of AF systems. 🚀 The Deutscher Fachverband für Agroforstwirtschaft (DeFAF) e.V.) has proposed alternative funding strategies to better support AF adoption. For Germany to meet its agroforestry targets, #policymakers must address the institutional barriers and assess the possible solutions. 👉 Check the full poster on the 'Agroforestry Adoption in Germany' by Simon Swatek, Dr. Prajna Kasargodu Anebagilu, Marcos Jiménez Martínez, and Eike Luedeling: https://lnkd.in/d5bDSYk8 #Agroforestry #SustainableAgriculture #Germany #Policy #EcoScheme #HorizonEurope

🌟Thank you for shining a light on the transformative project, Food Systems and Climate (FOSC)! The collaboration across five countries in Climate Resilient and Responsible Innovations in Potato (CRRIsP) is laying the groundwork for an agricultural #revolution in South Africa. Together, we're cultivating a sustainable future for farming that's both 🌿 innovative and 🚜 impactful. Your recognition amplifies our drive to make a real difference! Let's keep growing sustainably! 🌱💪 💡 #AgriculturalInnovation #ClimateAction" #potatoes #agriculture #communitydevelopment #ruraldevelopment #workingtogether #transformation #sdg1 #sdf2 #sdg5 #sdg8 #sdg10 #sdg11 #sdg13 #sdg17 https://lnkd.in/de6gTgK5" height="1083" width="504" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" title="Embedded post"></iframe
💥 Updates on the CRRIsP project! The project has now conducted interviews with small-holder farmers participating in potato production in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). The aim was to gain knowledge of their farming practices and perspectives on current constraints and anticipated futures in relation to climate change. 🥔 📖 Interviews form a case study aimed at gathering information that can inform research agendas as small-holders are less well-positioned to voice their interests and mobilize the support of researchers in addressing their technology challenges. CRRIsP facilitates inclusion. 👍 #food2030eu #sustainablefood #potatoes #sustainablefarming

Did you know❓ The fertile lowlands along the middle and lower reaches of the Danube rank among the most important agricultural regions in Europe. Agriculture is a key economic component in many Danube countries, supported by EU and national subsidies. Yet, the sector faces socio-economic challenges and is seeking ways to enhance sustainability and efficiency. The ICPDR's "Guidance Document on Sustainable Agriculture in the Danube River Basin" offers insights and recommendations for adopting sound policy instruments and agricultural measures that protect our water bodies. This initiative supports the preparation and implementation of national agro-environmental policies and strategies, ensuring the sustainable management of one of Europe's most vital agricultural regions. 👉 Learn more about sustainable agriculture practices along the #DRB and how they're shaping the future on our dedicated webpage: https://loom.ly/_XNASUY #ICPDR #KeeperoftheDanube
