The U.S. #longshoremenstrike has officially begun, posing significant risks to agricultural trade, especially for developing countries reliant on U.S. agricultural exports through East and Gulf Coast ports. In our new #issuepost, Joe Glauber explains that the #strike threatens to disrupt imports and exports, with containerized agricultural goods being most affected. Developing countries dependent on U.S. agricultural exports—particularly meat, dairy, and poultry—might need to seek alternative suppliers if the strike is prolonged. The severity of the disruption will depend on the strike’s duration and the extent to which shipping routes can be rerouted. Discount vouchers and subsidies are popular, evidence–backed mechanisms for reducing consumer prices and promoting demand—and in particular, expanding the use of quality inputs and other agricultural technologies among smallholder farmers. To better understand the complexities of coffee production in Papua New Guinea, IFPRI collaborated with the University of Goroka’s Center for Social and Creative Media Division (CSCM) to conduct gender-differentiated focus group discussions with coffee farmers across Simbu and Eastern Highland Provinces. Through discussions with men and women farmers, researchers learned about their perspectives on coffee production, including input use, pest control, weather shocks, labor, market access, and sales volume. September 29 is the United Nations International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste. This International Day highlights the critical need for financing to bolster efforts to reduce food loss and waste, contribute to achieving climate goals and advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Our recent blog by Suresh Babu, Yogendra Karki, Innocent PANGAPANGA-PHIRI, Md Sadat Anowar, and Nandita Srivastava examined national consultations on reducing food loss and waste in #Bangladesh, #Malawi and #Nepal.
