⚖️ On World Day for International Justice, Terre des hommes stresses the need to strengthen efforts to achieve child-centered justice and accountability for children affected by armed conflict. As recently highlighted by UN Children and armed conflict, unprecedent figures have been recorded of children directly and indirectly targeted, including in places like Gaza, Myanmar, and Ukraine, among others. ‘Child-centered accountability is needed more than ever. Fostering accountability of violations, abuses, and crimes against or affecting children contributes to ending impunity, reinforces the rule of law, contributes to effective prevention, and maximises the prospects of long-term peace, social cohesion and development. Collective action is urgent and should be prioritised’, says our colleague Marta Gil, Deputy Head of the Tdh Program Access to Justice. The next World Congress on Justice with Children in 2025 will prioritise the theme ‘Justice in times of crisis’ where child-centered accountability would be at the forefront. Why is it important to include women in #peace and #security efforts? How can young women from the MENA region and North Africa contribute to peacebuilding in their communities? How does illegal arms trafficking impact the safety and stability of communities in the MENA region? What role can advocacy play in combating the illegal transfer of small arms? More and more we will answer during in our workshop This workshop is organized by the International Humanitarian Law and Youth Initiative in collaboration with The International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) and is supported by UNSCAR. Our objectives align with those of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and IANSA, focusing on empowering young women from across the MENA region. We aim to build their capacities in monitoring, documentation, and advocacy related to the implementation of the Programme of Action on Small Arms (PoA). Ma'in Alshamayleh Elli Kytomaki

The Technical Assistance Unit (TAU) - Support to the Criminal Justice Reform in Ethiopia Programme, funded by the European Union 🇪🇺 and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) International Services-led consortium with DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance, works with criminal justice institutions to empower Ethiopian citizens by promoting understanding of fundamental rights. Today, let's talk about the Rights of Women and Children as we continue to explore fundamental rights in Ethiopia. These rights ensure special provisions to protect women and children from discrimination and exploitation: 👩👧👦 Protection from discrimination: Women and children must be safeguarded against any form of discrimination, ensuring they have equal opportunities and treatment in all spheres of life. 🛡️ Safeguards against exploitation: Specific measures are put in place to protect women and children from exploitation, abuse, and violence, ensuring their safety and well-being in society. These rights are crucial to foster a society where women and children can thrive, free from fear and harm. #EU GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti #Ethiopia #CriminalJusticeReform #Justice4All #RightsOfWomenAndChildren #LegalReform #RuleOfLaw #HumanRights #AccessToJustice #JusticeReform #Safety #Protection

Ethiopia's human rights situation has significantly worsened since 2019. The government, militias, and armed groups have committed widespread abuses with impunity, violating human rights and humanitarian law. The lack of transparency and independent oversight in addressing past and ongoing atrocities has only exacerbated the problem. Journalists, civil society organizations, and public figures have faced a hostile environment, with arbitrary arrests and prolonged detention without charge. https://lnkd.in/ecuwC_m7

Last week, I joined the first-ever side event at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on “Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State Relations: Building Global Solidarity.” Co-hosted by Canada, Belgium, and Argentina, the event underscored the importance of global solidarity to prevent and end the practice. I spoke about needing more research to better understand this complicated policy area. A special thank you to Julie Sunday and all the organizers of this event. ▶ For more research on this topic, read The Soufan Center (TSC)’s report “Citizens for Leverage” https://lnkd.in/g-_nyZKf ▶ For more on the human impact on families and hostages, follow Hostage International ▶ For more on how to support and protect aid workers, follow Protect Humanitarians ▶ For more on multilateral efforts, follow Canada’s Declaration Against Arbitrary Detention In State-to-State Relations https://lnkd.in/eCsGsNTv ▶ For more on investigating cases, follow the work of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention https://lnkd.in/eZtBreF2 #HRC56 #ArbitraryDetention

Why Harm and Hurt the Innocent, Sinless and the Helpless? The plight of innocent, meek, and injured individuals, particularly infants who are suffering in any situation, is a matter of deep concern for the international community. It is imperative that all actions are carried out in accordance with international humanitarian laws and human rights standards. In the context of any conflict or geopolitical situation, it is essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of all civilians, especially the most vulnerable among them, such as infants. Deliberate harm or violence against such individuals is unacceptable and goes against the principles of justice and humanity. Resolution of conflicts should be sought through peaceful and diplomatic means, and all parties involved should work towards the protection and welfare of civilians, irrespective of their background or nationality. This approach aligns with the values and principles upheld in international law, which aim to prevent the suffering of innocent individuals and create conditions for peace, stability, and coexistence.

The Palestinian issue is a humanitarian and just issue related to human rights, freedom and dignity. The Palestinians are struggling for their right to a dignified life and independence, and they face enormous challenges and harsh conditions under an occupation for 75 yrs. Therefore, we must understand that the resistance they are showing today in #AlaqsaFlood is the result of their long suffering. We need to think deeply and with real empathy to understand and support their case and legal justice battle. We have seen just this year Approx 230 people had been killed in cold blood in the streets of the #WestBank by the Israels occupation force and settlers. In #Gaza approx. 15,000 mostly children and women have been bombarded and killed by the Israels occupation force over the last 20 yrs. Let alone the wounded that are in 10s of thousands. Let alone the demolitions of houses, bombing innocent children with planes, killing thousands of innocent people, taking their rights to dignified life, Subjugation on the security gates and their own streets, Apartheid, Oppression, Illegal Military Occupation, Colonialism, war Crimes, Terrorism, Crimes Against Humanity, Violations of International Law ……. because it believes it owns the land and is capable without anyone holding it accountable. That is the reality of the Palestinians every day for 75 yrs, and for what? Just to achieve the State of #Israel on the ashes of the Palestinians, to erase the people of the land and replace them with foreigners from all over the world. Let us stand with justice and all strive to end the occupation and achieve peace and stability in the region. #BreakingTheSilence #FreePalestine #FreeGaza #AntiCorruption #AntiTerrorism #ApartheidIsrael
“I am deeply concerned for the wellbeing of children in Israel and the State of Palestine. With hundreds of civilians reportedly killed or injured, we are closely monitoring the situation for reports of grave rights violations committed against children. UNICEF calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities, and for all parties to protect children from harm and afford them the special protection to which they are entitled, in accordance with their obligations under international humanitarian law.” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell Read full statement: https://uni.cf/3Q7je7f
