How can fast-fashion be more sustainable? A new study has found that fast-fashion retailers like Zara, Shein, and H&M are using resale platforms as an attempt to reduce their carbon footprints. However, the study suggests that these programs are projected to have little impact on emissions reduction. The analysis argues that these brands could be more effective in reducing their environmental impact by redirecting their efforts towards their supply chain, such as using sustainable materials and investing in recycling innovations. #fashion #sustainability #styleanddesign #ethicalfashion #Innovation #Future

“We’re all in an industry which has spiraled out of control. Overproduction is up to 40% in fashion. It means that almost half the pieces we produce don’t end up in the hands of consumers.” That was the opening line of Konrad Olsson founder of Scandinavian MIND, yesterday at Retail Talks, Sustainability and Profit at Epicenter Store. But there is hope. If we work with technology we can achieve sustainability and full circularity. Sharing the main insights I wrote down from the different speakers: 👩💻 E-commerce was supposed to be a more sustainable way of selling but ultimately it is not, it increases over production and shipping and returns have a huge impact on the environment. The issue is that most brands who want to become sustainable are not tech-educated and you need technology to achieve sustainability. “What brands really need now is not only a Sustainability Officer but a good CTO”. So on point again Konrad. 💰 The only way to get a project about sustainability implemented is to show how it drives financial value to the CFO said Natasha Franck, CEO at EON. With their “digital twins” (or what most commonly called a Digital Product Passport) EON help brands control their resale channels. Ultimately it increases the product lifetime value by selling it multiple times. 🌿 Digital product passports are an opportunity for the consumer to take full ownership and responsibility of the product, to truly care about the product. Malva Carlsson at Houdini Sportswear looks at nature as a blueprint. “Nothing becomes waste” and so should it be for fashion as an industry. 🏃♀️ We are front-runners here in Sweden when it comes to sustainable practices in fashion and we should keep inspiring other markets. I was glad to hear Helena Waker share that when she was in Paris last week at a big fashion fair a lot of french brands were inspired and looking up to Swedish fashion. It’s happening here and we can be proud of that. 🛍 The most important reason why Shein is so successful is because they are extremely close to the trends. Customers want to come back to the website because there is always something new. Only resale can compete with that. By being very strong on data, knowing what customers are looking for, what’s trending you can restock unique items of the same category and drive traffic. That’s one of the reason behind the success of ARKIVET Second Hand as Martin Hallander was sharing on stage. Thank you Coco Jacoel for setting up such a great line up of speakers and content. My take is that indeed, it has all spiraled out of control but there is hope.
