Exploring the True Impact of Impact Investing Recent research from Harvard Business School reveals intriguing insights into the world of impact investing, which now exceeds $1 trillion in assets. While impact investors are more likely to invest in disadvantaged areas and emerging industries, the study suggests that the majority of their funds go to companies that could also secure traditional capital. Key findings include: Co-Investment Trends: Over half of impact investment rounds involve traditional investors. Investment Focus: Impact investors target regions with lower economic output and prioritize sectors like consumer staples and energy. Employee Satisfaction: A notable decline in employee satisfaction post-impact investment warrants further investigation. What is impact investing. In recent years, the name impact investment has become popular and there has been a growing emphasis on it as many investors are incorporating impact considerations into their portfolios. But what exactly is impact investing? According to the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), Impact investments is defined as “investments made with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and/or environmental impact alongside a financial return.” As a matter of principle, there must be intent to create social and financial impact and an attempt to measure the change. Impact investment focuses on “doing good” and “doing well” without having to choose one over the other. One of progressive elements of impact investing is that it challenges the views that social problems should only be addressed through grants and CSI and that investments and funding should focus on achieving financial and social returns. This approach encompasses a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, renewable energy, healthcare, and education. The goal is to drive meaningful change while achieving competitive returns. We are pleased to present our 2023 Impact Report, titled “Celebrating Our 10-year Journey Building Asia’s Multi-fund Impact Investment Platform”. Over the last decade, successive generations of the Heritas team have worked to demonstrate the integration of impact and value creation as our investment practice, establishing our track record from origination to exit, over sometimes challenging business cycles. In this report marking our 10-year journey, we have pleased to celebrate in March 2023 the successful first close of our Asia Impact First Fund (AIFF) at over US$20 million, with DBS Foundation (DBS Bank) as our knowledge partner to pioneer impact-first investing for Asia. Following the first close of AIFF, we proceeded to complete our first impact-first investment, made into Bettr, the first B-Corp in Southeast Asia and a leading Singapore-based social enterprise operating a specialty coffee and beverage business that supports marginalised individuals and youth-at-risk, to scale its business and impact. We also highlight a case study sharing Heritas’ track record and experience in impact and value creation, leading to the conduct of a responsible exit pertaining to the sale of Timberland Medical Centre, a leading private medical centre in Kuching, Sarawak (majority owned by Heritas since 2016 in a buyout deal) to IHH Healthcare in August 2023. We asked ourselves how impact investors should conduct an exit responsibly, and were pleased to design and execute impact investing processes from origination to exit after a 7-year holding period. We hope you find this report highlighting our practitioner perspectives interesting and enjoyable to read and we look forward to joining hands on the exciting and fulfilling journey of impact investing for the next decade and beyond!
