Being a fundraiser, to me, means embracing the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. My role at the YMCA, which I am deeply passionate about, allows me to be my authentic self, whether that means showing up to work dressed as a pirate, leading songs, or educating about safety in fun and engaging ways. However, beyond these lighter moments, the true essence of my job lies in the ability to effect positive change in the lives of children and their families. Throughout my time here, I've been moved by the resilience of families facing challenges that seem insurmountable. Our team works diligently to provide tailored support, striving to create an environment where each person feels valued and cared for, without them sensing the extent of our efforts. This focus on delivering an exceptional experience is at the heart of what we do. As we look forward to 2024, there are specific areas where funding is critically needed. I am reaching out today to ask if you or someone you know can help champion one of these causes. Your support could significantly help us bridge the funding gaps for essential services: - Providing an on-site nurse during the summer, which requires $12,000. - Hiring a seasonal behavior specialist, with a funding need of $7,800. - Employing a seasonal mental health specialist for both staff and campers, also needing $7,800. - Offering direct access to families impacted by cancer, which requires $8,000. - Supporting families navigating the foster system, needing a similar amount of $8,000. - Providing Support to (10) Title 1 schools so students can access Outdoor education, with a funding need of $7,000-10,000 - In 2023 with provided $150,000 of program adjustments, closing this gap also allows us to focus on program advancement. Your involvement, whether through direct support or connecting us with potential champions for these causes, can profoundly influence the lives of those we serve. On any given day, over 400,000 children are in the U.S. foster care system. A number of environmental and societal factors play a role in these kids being separated from their families, and while children of all races can be found in this system, a disproportionate number of these children are Black. Studies have shown that Black children in foster care experience disparate treatment and significantly higher risk for negative outcomes later in life compared to other children in the system. Community is more than a place. It's about the lives we touch and the impact we make. Chairing the Punggol West Community Centre Management Committee... I have seen the power of community engagement. It creates a space where people feel supported, connected, and empowered. The impact? We nurture a sense of belonging and mutual support. From youth programs to initiatives for the elderly, our efforts are designed to make sure no one feels left out or behind. Why this matters... In a world that's increasingly digital. The human connection matters more than ever. Our work in the community is a reminder of the tangible difference we can make in each other's lives. Here's what I've learned... Every contribution, no matter how small, has the potential to spark change. What does it take to build a stronger, more inclusive community?   For one, it takes generosity. In the past year, our community has generously supported our efforts to build and advocate for a community that includes people with developmental disabilities and their families as respected, valued, and contributing members. From attending our sold-out community events to donating needed picnic tables at record speed, from sponsoring our signature fundraisers to sponsoring children and families for our year-end holiday drive and more, community members and businesses have proven their commitment to contributing time, talent, and dollars in support of our work.   A strong and inclusive community also needs kindness.   I have found that kindness is the easiest and most effective way to create the human connections that define a community – and kindness costs nothing. I encourage you to nurture kindness in your community. Here are a few ideas:   • When you pass someone on the street, smile and say, ‘Hello’ • Get to know someone with or without a disability who is different from yourself • Make an effort to help people at events and community groups feel welcome • Learn about what other people are going through to better understand their perspective • Remember that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity   A sense of community relies on empathy, compassion, and shared effort toward the safe, dignified, and fulfilling lives we all want to live. Isolation, loneliness, and exclusion are preventable social issues that affect us all. Nurturing kindness can help us build the connections that reduce isolation and create the sense of belonging we all need to thrive as respected, included, and contributing community members.   As 2024 gets underway, consider: how can you nurture kindness in your life, workplace, and community? This is for my fellow introverts. I have found a hack to break into a new community... And I have 3 tips for you to start. It is 'Volunteering' And no → it's not difficult. → It doesn't take more time than you give it. → And it works in a short time! You see... I'm not the loudest in the room. But → I'm a great listener and I love making new friends. However → It's hard to find my way around like-minded individuals outside my usual circles. Here are 3 tips if you want to start: 1. Discover Your Passion 2. Start Locally 3. Commit to a regular schedule → this builds trust and strengthens your connection. I started volunteering at the Museum London, and it has been an amazing experience. Our recent event #UPwithART was an absolute highlight!
