Updated Profile Photograph: A Paul Harvey Explanation In conjunction with the post announcing the upcoming five-volume series The Inspiring Histories and Legacies of American Lager Beer, there was one other piece of history that needed to be addressed - the profile photograph I used when first opening my LinkedIn account back in 2013ish. There up until the past week, this photograph traced back to the summer of 2012. Fast forward to the past week, it was time to replace it with a more representative image reflecting one's transition in life from their mid-50s to knocking on the door of being 70! The new photograph though has everything to do with the upcoming series. It was taken on October 21, 2023 while sitting on a rocking chair on the front porch of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Why there? Well it was part of a personal bucket list (now checked off, with many, many more to go) as on August 3, 1908, one of the most fascinating exchanges pertinent to the survival of American adjunct lager beer took place (IMO of course), namely: Dr. Robert Wahl: "The all-malt beer has become, in the mind of the Brewers' Committee, almost extinct in America. The option of the Brewers' Committee was "let these beers rest in pleace". "Why resurrect them?" To which a Pure Food Commissioner replied: "Yet let us erect a tombstone and inscribe on it the epitaph: Hic jacet cerevisia malti." To be able to stand in the same room, and sit on a rocker on the same porch as that day from 115 years ago, was both humbling and inspiring. While a far more detailed contextual account awaits Volume 4 (1874-1918): The Inspiring Defense of America's Beer, the attachment to this post is a photograph depicting one Dr. Harvey Wiley and Lucius Moody Tolman taken at the same location as the updated profile picture. As to who the heck is Paul Harvey and why I invoked him in this post (likely just about everyone under the age of 50), there's always Google!

EP 132: “Hops and Hardships” – Mike & Blaine by Blaine Bertsch It was a good run. After almost two decades of growth and an explosion of crazy-good flavors, the craft brewing business is in decline. How could that be? You would think the beer snobs would revolt or come to their favorite brewers' rescue, but that hasn’t happened yet. In this episode, Mike and Blaine speak […] #boomers #babyboomers

Woah, I hear the reactions to Homebrewcon being put on "Hiatus". My own take? Love the move. Put aside the financial realities, declining attendance, and simple need and consider where the GABF came from; the AHA and homebrewing. "The Great American Beer Festival got its start in 1982 as just a part of the American Homebrewers Association‘s fourth annual conference. If the name is any indication, however, founder Charlie Papazian had grander ambitions for this remarkable event." The roots of beer as we know it today, can be directly drawn back to the AHA, the early days of GABF, Charlie P., and so many other pioneers like him. Beer was beer, however it came about. That symbiotic approach paid dividends. So I applaud the Brewers Association on this decision. I understand how it may feel to many, but right now, we need to bring everyone under the same tent; from homebrewers to pro-brewers, from 5-gallon batches to larger industrial production, from homebrew to macro. Power in numbers, strength in solidarity. Beer is changing in front of our eyes, and we all need to adapt to find a new foundation and perhaps tap back into the mindsets of those folks in the late 70's and early 80's. We can figure this out together. Relax, don't worry, have a homebrew. https://lnkd.in/g_TbpG4R

It’s Thursday, so throwing it back to honor what was once my favorite day of the week - Bowling night. In college, we rolled every Thursday for three years. Take that for a liberal arts education! I could’ve told you from experience that bowlers over-index in beer consumption, but here are some numbers on the bowling participant to back it up: 🎳 Bowlers are beer drinkers - 54% consume beer on a monthly basis, which is 40% more than the average U.S. adult (21+). 🎳 Bowlers prefer domestic beer; US beer brands rank first among bowlers alcoholic beverage of choice. 🎳 Bowlers like to party - they are 2x more likely to go to bars or clubs than the average US adult 21+. Checkout the throwback photo our team (50 Shades of Chay) below! Samuel Boissard, Alex Saralegui, Austin Zimmerman, Toby Porter And thanks to Grace Kang for the insights!

A productive week spent at the Brewers Association CBC in Vegas, meeting suppliers, brewers, and event organizers. Massive thanks to the Brewers Association and Konvoy for their support. Excited to share that there are lots of BD opportunities for We Are Beer down the line. Looking forward to a productive summer working with both organizations over here in the UK. Despite the challenges that the industry is facing globally, leaving Las Vegas feeling pretty positive. Why? ➡ Because the topline trading numbers are decent and people still want premium. The raw material for commercial success is there. ➡ Because the craft and indy sector is where the vast majority of "new" in beer starts, and where the creative capital lies - both brands and products. ➡ Because we're entering into a new phase for good beer and we haven't really seen the sector make its move post-covid. Knowing and meeting the hard working and smart people in beer, and seeing some of the plans and strategies coming into play, I think you'll see good beer kick on again. Which is great for the whole category. Excited to get stuck in.
