Today, I noticed that the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced a few different funding awards: - £20m for a new leisure and cultural hub in Farnborough, Surrey; - £18m for Partington Sports Village, Manchester (operated by Trafford Leisure - a Community Interest Company); - £20m for an Outdoor Sports Centre in Southampton (operated by Active Nation - a charitable company); and - £7.7m for three projects across Camden, including Talacre Community Sports Centre (operated by Better, a charitable registered society). The awards were made under the second round of the Levelling Up Fund. Two things stand out to me about these awards: - first, they recognise the crucial importance that local sports and leisure facilities provide in communities, and the chasm in access to such facilities that exists across the UK; and - second, each of the three established sports/leisure operators funded above is a different type of non-commercial entity - one is a CIC, another a charitable company, and another a charitable registered society. Thank you to Katie Stephenson for the invite to Cafe St Honore to hear about LandAid's ambitions for the next 5 years. Completely sobering to hear about the numbers of homeless youth, which are rising nationally and the brilliant work being done by LandAid and other charities such as Four Square in Edinburgh led by Jane Devine to provide shelter, support and a stepping stone for people to secure permanent accommodation. Did you know that numbers of homelessness are on the rise, with the largest group being 16-25 year olds? These people are often left homeless after a family break up or through domestic violence. They then have no support network to help them live on their own or understand how the world works. They are disadvantaged almost immediately. I can have no idea of how difficult this must be, but I want to help. There are approximately 267,000 homes sitting empty in the UK, which means 6 months or longer. With a housing crisis taking centre stage and an appalling number of people finding themselves homeless, action is necessary. LandAid's ambitions are mighty and I am looking forward to supporting the charity with Dentons and all of the other partners. However, to eradicate homelessness it requires policy, it requires charities to support the policy and it requires volunteers and businesses to support the charities. There are not enough affordable homes to go around in Devon. So it is great to see Torbay Council being creative with its property to improve the situation for renters and first-time buyers. At Julian House we are seeing more and more people coming through the doors of our emergency temporary accommodation, our supported housing and on our daily outreach walks. The biggest problem our clients face is the lack of affordable homes to move on to when they’re trying to rebuild their lives. But we can’t ignore the people who have already hit crisis point – people who are homeless or rough sleeping. According to government figures, rough sleeping in the last year increased: Torbay by 35%. Devon by 27%. Across the South West by 18%. When the Chancellor presents her budget in October, we need to see a renewal of previous governments’ commitments to end rough sleeping, and the funding to help providers to do that. As it stands, local authorities and the charities they fund with government allocations are facing a funding cliff-edge for homelessness support.

I went to a bike event recently and upon introducing myself to someone, their first question was “so: what radicalized you?” I was like, "okay, we're diving right in!" 😅 Then shortly after came up with like 10 examples: 🤡 maybe the time I was hit by a car on my bike in #Baltimore? a time I look back and "laugh at" but in reality was quite scary?? 🤡 maybe the many nights in #SanDiego, when I was dependent on an embarrassingly dysfunctional bus system, so bought a used bike with my humble Jesuit Volunteer Corps stipend, and then had to bike on 8 lane roadways to get home?? 🤡 perhaps the time I saw a collision between a runner and a helmet-less cyclist in the bike line, in which the cyclist cracked their head open? 🤡 or seeing the size of these #SUVs cruising down the road, and thinking about the dear kiddos in my family whom I love, and how they wouldn’t even be seen in the road from a car that tall? 🤡 or probably just every single time I ride my bike through NYC—a city I still feel is one of the best American cities to bike in—despite the 4 million ways it needs improvement?? These cars are ON one, and it is alarming. 👺🚨😳 And when I think of #ClimateFutures, I think of places where we are free from dependency on cars and the #fuels that make them go. I think of #freedom from exhaust and #pollution. I think of movement, fun, adventure, all of which are made possible by #transportation alternatives like biking. Getting radicalized can mean getting ✨inspired✨ to push beyond the status quo that’s literally killing us—and that feels good!
