You’ve probably already experienced the joys of a great night’s sleep after a hard workout! Exercising has a positive impact on your sleep overall, and now, there may be evidence that working out in the evening could help you get more (and better) sleep without disrupting your routine. 💤 Without good sleep, you’ll be fatigued, low-energy, and unfocused throughout your day, no matter your other healthy habits. How, when, and how long you sleep all matter just as much as the food you eat and the exact workouts you follow. Even if you only have time for a quick stretch after work and before bed, studies like these show us that it’s always better to stay active than not, and to integrate these exercises into a routine that includes lots of time for sleep. #sleep #bettersleep #healthyhabits #exercise #wellness #wellbeing

Exercise can also improve sleep 🛏🥱 in indirect ways. For instance, moderate to vigorous physical 🏃♀activity can decrease the risk of excessive weight gain, which in turn makes that person less likely to experience symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) 💤😴. Certain exercises are more beneficial for sleep; these include yoga, light stretching, and breathing exercises 🧘♀🧎🏿♀ People who engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise may see a difference in sleep quality that same night. Moderate aerobic exercise increases the amount of slow-wave sleep you get. Slow-wave sleep refers to deep sleep, where the brain and body have a chance to rejuvenate. Exercise can also help to stabilize your mood and decompress the mind, “a cognitive process that is important for naturally transitioning to sleep. August 1, 2024 "Rock-A-Bye Baby…How’s Your Sleep Fitness?" I absolutely concur with the statement made by my colleague, Dr. Michael Breus aka the ‘Sleep Doctor’: “Sleep has a direct effect on anxiety, depression, moodiness. Literally everything you do, you do better with a good night’s sleep.” Sleep should be considered one of the three pillars of good health, along with diet and exercise, and should be prioritized as part of a healthy lifestyle. The need for sleep never goes away, especially if we’re pushing ourselves creatively, professionally or athletically. Are you getting 7 to 8.5 hours of uninterrupted sleep? Besides feeling rested in the morning, there are some significant benefits derived from experiencing quality and quantity of sleep on a nightly basis. Good sleep can turn on about 700 health-promoting genes. More tomorrow, so stay tuned. Dr. Karen Pendleton
