SLEEP BETTER TONIGHT: SLEEP AND EXERCISE Saturday was National Health and Fitness Day in Canada. While the benefits of exercise on general well-being are well-known, did you know exercise can greatly impact your sleep? · 30 minutes of exercise can help you sleep better, tonight. And the good news is any type of exercise can help – from weights to walking to yoga! · Early research shows exercise may have a similar effect as a sleeping pill in helping to decrease insomnia, yet more studies are needed. · Exercise can release endorphins that keep you awake, so the best bet is to save exercise for earlier in the day. Plan to complete your exercise at least 1-2 hours before your bedtime. · Overall, exercise can calm the mind and stabilize your mood, helping you drift off to sleep more easily! Want Better Sleep? Take a Walk. 💤 If you’re struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep, the solution might be simpler than you think—just get moving. According to Dr. Charlene Gamaldo, medical director of Johns Hopkins Center for Sleep, there’s solid evidence that exercise can help you fall asleep faster and improve your sleep quality. But when it comes to timing your workout, it’s all about listening to your body. How Exercise Helps: Moderate aerobic exercise, like walking, increases the amount of deep, restorative sleep you get. This is the stage of sleep where your brain and body truly rejuvenate. Plus, exercise can stabilize your mood and decompress your mind—both crucial for winding down at night. Timing Matters: While some people can exercise anytime and sleep soundly, others may find that working out too close to bedtime keeps them awake. The key is to know your body. If you’re sensitive to exercise-induced endorphins or a rise in body temperature, try finishing your workout at least 1 to 2 hours before bed to give your body time to wind down. How Much Exercise Do You Need? The good news: just 30 minutes of moderate exercise, like walking, can improve your sleep quality that very night. You don’t need to train for a marathon—just find an activity you enjoy and stick with it. Whether it’s walking, yoga, or lifting weights, consistent movement can make a big difference in how well you sleep. Takeaway: Exercise is a powerful tool for better sleep, but there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Pay attention to how your body responds to different workout times and routines, and find what works best for you. Better sleep could be just a walk away. 💤 #SleepHealth #Wellness #ExerciseForSleep #HealthyLiving #BetterSleep Brian Bourey

You’ve probably already experienced the joys of a great night’s sleep after a hard workout! Exercising has a positive impact on your sleep overall, and now, there may be evidence that working out in the evening could help you get more (and better) sleep without disrupting your routine. 💤 Without good sleep, you’ll be fatigued, low-energy, and unfocused throughout your day, no matter your other healthy habits. How, when, and how long you sleep all matter just as much as the food you eat and the exact workouts you follow. Even if you only have time for a quick stretch after work and before bed, studies like these show us that it’s always better to stay active than not, and to integrate these exercises into a routine that includes lots of time for sleep. #sleep #bettersleep #healthyhabits #exercise #wellness #wellbeing
