Housing, roads, electronics, food, healthcare. Our sector is fundamental to the standard of living, and yet most people remain unaware of the role mining plays. When I think of the future – with its electric vehicles and green energy sources, I can’t help but feel a thrill at the opportunity and just a wee bit of anxiety about how we’ll get there as investing in mining and exploration weakens. I wrote about it for The Mining Executive last month. https://lnkd.in/gQKfTHZB

The energy transition requires a wide variety and large quantities of critical raw materials. Yet, the mining industry - espcially in Western jurisdictions - is facing massive challenges. 📑 Complex approval processes 😡 Local opposition 💸 Access to capital or 👨🔧 Access to skilled labour are just some amongst many. While recycling and secondary mining will surely become more and more important, primary mining in Western jurisdictions will be required. Especially if the target is to reduce dependencies. In my opinion, one of the keys to unlocking Western mining potential is improving the general public environment towards mining. Easier said then done, I know. But what is your opinion? If you're curious and would like to read more: My colleagues from rawmaterials.net put together an interesting article with more details: https://lnkd.in/eGK8wySn https://lnkd.in/ewDhu6uA Brian Hendrich Eric Hendrich

Mining is seen as important to a net zero emissions future. A Gen Z perspective on the mining industry 🌏💼 "Mining is crucial in our journey moving forward to a cleaner environment. However, I still have a considerable amount of apprehension to fully support this sector. We can’t get rid of mining altogether – I understand that – but we need to transition out of coal immediately and only mine for the materials used to produce cleaner energy (solar panels, wind turbines)." An analysis of 5,336 U.S. mining properties in the S&P Global Market Intelligence database (as of March 15, 2021) found the majority of U.S. reserves of cobalt, copper, lithium, and nickel are located within 35 miles of Native American reservations. Often referred to as “green minerals” or “critical minerals,” cobalt, lithium, and nickel are vital components for low-carbon energy. But we know that mining is not without impacts, and historically, Native American communities have not only been left out of decisions regarding land use on and near their lands, they have born disproportionate harm from mining and other extractive industries. The “green revolution” is an opportunity to learn from past mistakes and meaningfully involve North American Tribes in deciding when, how, and where mining should happen with relation to their sovereign territories. Otherwise, this is just a repeat of the past, something Tribes are calling “green colonialism.” Recent US policies have made it easier for mining companies seeking critical minerals to fast-track approval processes – the same support should be given to Tribes to engage in review of proposed mines and government-to-government consultation, as mandated by the law, on these projects moving forward. We are committed to helping shoulder the burdens faced due to mining and resource extraction by supporting communities in self-determination of their role in mining development and protection of their environment and health for generations to come. Join us in helping build a safer, healthier future for all: https://lnkd.in/gV7CUBtC Every dollar you donate will be matched with an additional two dollars through the end of this month!!

“who pays to prevent something bad from happening?”... “What is the value of that?” - Upstream by Dan Heath In the realm of mining, resource development and mineral exploration, Ore Body Knowledge stands as the critical financial keystone, shaping the economic viability and sustainability of mining ventures. This knowledge, when obtained early in the exploration phase and/or tactically during mining operations, can drastically reduce uncertainties associated with resource development and improve operational planning and financial forecasting. It is akin to mining's Rosetta Stone, deciphering the intricate economic narratives embedded within the geological data. The quantification of OBK's financial value has historically been a complex challenge, yet it is essential for investors and financial analysts seeking to mitigate risks and maximise returns from mining investments. IMDEX is pioneering a research initiative aimed at quantifying the Value of Information (VoI) that OBK provides. I highly recommend you tune in for Dave Lawie's chat with Jessica Keast on geohug Wednesday 24th April (register below). Most who know me understand how passionate I am about both how a better understanding of the value of information will reset capital inflows to mineral exploration, and probably more so, listening to Dave Lawie speak about the topic.
