When people tell me Net Zero is expensive - I say: yes, it will cost money, but most of that will be investment from the private sector* and deliver loads of wider economic benefits. Take Last Energy's proposed #Llynfi Clean Energy Project in South Wales: ✅ £300m capital investment with no public funding required ✅ £30m+ South Wales supply chain investment ✅ 100+ local full time jobs created. #Nuclear will play a key role in the UK's future energy mix. Last Energy's route to market using commercial Power Purchase Agreements (#PPAs), private financing, and co-located development is well established in the energy industry but innovative for nuclear energy. It is this kind of cross-industry learning that is vital for a future of clean, reliable, and affordable energy. Link to site in comments. *Between 75%-90% of capital will come from private sector funding, and the quicker we move - the higher this proportion will be. Search #CleanGrowthGap for more.

Thank you to the EIC (Energy Industries Council) for inviting me onto the wrap-up/next steps panel. Quite a daunting task after the excellent presentations. Two themes were repeatedly mentioned throughout the event, 'prompt decision making' and 'resources'. Without doubt we are charging up the late curve to #netzero and while we remain optimistic, we need to decide with haste which pathways are the most viable way forwards and focus our energies on those. This will also help what could be our ultimate rate limiting factor of resources; materials and people. Collaboration, new skills, training, and inward mobility to the sector will be important to sustain the multifold growth needed, but it has a limit, so it will also be a productivity and outcome game, to secure the most from those increased resources. Hinkley Point C delays raise UK blackout risk. New research predicts possible power outages in the UK by 2028, stemming from delays in French-built nuclear reactors and closures of existing power plants like Ratcliffe-on-Soar. Analysis by Public First points to an impending crisis as demand surpasses baseload capacity by 7.5GW during peak hours, equal to the electricity needs of over seven million households. Government data shows consumers facing a £2.8 billion increase in bills in 2028 to ensure adequate power generation capacity. Switzerland's planned withdrawal from nuclear, coupled with rising energy demand from electrification of transport and heat pumps, plus the country's ambitions to #decarbonise are making security of supply a key challenge. Our latest report gives an overview of the country's current energy landscape and key areas of the #Mantelerlass, proposed legislation which is due to go to the popular vote on 9 June. The legislation, which targets the expansion of renewables and security of supply, could have a big impact if voted through. More positive news for the nuclear sector today from Last Energy! This is after yesterday's announcement from Google ordering six or seven Kairos Power SMR's. "Last Energy, a full-service developer of 20 MWe micro modular nuclear power plants, announced today a new project to deploy four units in Bridgend County, Wales to serve local industrial customers." "Last Energy will not require public funding for the development, and estimates an overall capital investment of £300 million in equipment, services, and other development-related activities. The company plans to source at least 10% of its needs from South Wales suppliers, translating to a £30 million local economic investment (not including business rates collected by Bridgend County) and at least 100 local full-time jobs." #electricity #nuclearenergy #energy #energytransition #energypolicy #energysecurity #infrastructure https://lnkd.in/eewcN_Xf
