I love this shot. Retail media in the 1970s seems to have included “telephone by the butcher counter to get advice on your meat, and pamphlets titled ‘I’m a beef!’” Those days are (sadly!) long gone, but when we asked 135,000 consumers about in-store advertising... turns out the old ways of promoting new products still work best, and have the biggest financial impact for CPGs. 2/3 of consumers said in-store advertisements helped them make a decision on what to buy. And it was in-store ads and free samples that were most influential, way above digital promos. In my Retail Innovation class, we spend time looking at innovations of the past, that then become so normalized, they become ubiquitous and sometimes mistakenly dismissed. I look at this and ask myself: is it not possible that she worked through to the right help, faster than fumbling with a smartphone and multiple google pages? Assuming a) help is quick to arrive on lifting the handset, b) there are rarely multiple people with questions at the same time, and c) there are handiwipes adjacent, how better off today are we without this? PS - We are supporting @TruRating in their approach to retail leaders, particularly in Canada. A true innovator in the area of store performance and feedback when the word has become a bit too 'commoditized'. PM me if interested.
