[ESG KNOWLEDGE] DECARBONIZING INDUSTRIES – AVIATION SUSTAINABILITY Aviation is one of the most carbon-intensive industries, and while passengers may not yet fully grasp its environmental impact, the sector is already taking bold steps towards a sustainable future. In 2019, IAG led the way by becoming the first airline group to pledge Net-Zero carbon emissions by 2050, setting a powerful precedent. This commitment sparked broader actions, including the U.S.'s 2021 Aviation Climate Action Plan, and at COP26, the International Aviation Climate Ambition Coalition (IACAC) made a collective pledge to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. But commitments alone aren't enough. Governments and industry leaders are turning pledges into action. In July 2021, the European Commission unveiled its “Fit for 55” initiative, aiming for 63% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) usage by 2050. Similarly, California’s updated Low Carbon Fuel Standard now recognizes SAF for carbon credits, and the UK is pushing for 10% SAF in its jet fuel mix by 2030. 🔑 These ambitious goals are matched by substantial investments from the industry. Partnerships with organizations like ACI World - Airports Council International are helping scale the development and adoption of low-carbon fuels. Airports themselves are rethinking infrastructure to support net-zero propulsion, investing in renewable energy, and embracing sustainable waste management practices. ✈ As the aviation industry embraces these changes, it sets an inspiring example for others. Even in sectors as complex as aviation and not typically spotlighted for their emissions, significant progress can be made. The commitment to innovation, collaboration, and sustainable practices shows that no industry is beyond transformation. Now, it’s time for every sector to take bold steps toward a sustainable future. Let’s move beyond traditional boundaries and move towards sustainability! 🔗 Follow ESGs & Climate Consulting for more insights! ______________ 𝐄𝐒𝐆𝐬 & 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 Email: together@esgs.asia LinkedIn: https://lnkd.in/ebEBBXBc #Aviation #ClimateChange #ESGsClimateConsulting #ESGsAsia

Earth Day is a time to focus on taking responsibility for our planet. While making pledges to reduce our carbon footprint is a good way to start, it is not enough. To make a real difference, we need to take measurable actions. Here's how we can steer towards a cleaner future: 1. Embrace innovation: Invest in fuel-efficient technologies such as electric or hybrid vessels for maritime transport and explore sustainable aviation fuels to reduce emissions. 2. Optimize operations: Adopt route planning strategies that minimize fuel consumption and optimize efficiency in both maritime and aviation sectors. 3. Champion green practices: Promote waste reduction on board vessels and terminals, explore shore power options for docked ships, and invest in sustainable waste management solutions at airports. 4. Lead by example: Share best practices, success stories, and sustainability goals to inspire collaboration across the industry. Let's work together to make a positive impact and ensure a brighter, more sustainable future. #earthday2024 #verifavia #sustainability #maritime #aviation #earthday

Aviation industry sounds alarm on net zero goals ⚠ 🛫🌍 At International Air Transport Association (IATA)'s World Sustainability Summit in Miami, industry leaders warned about the challenges in reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Here's what you need to know: 1. The Price Tag: $3.2 trillion needed between now and 2050 for the net zero journey, according to ICAO's Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar. 2. Urgent Action Needed: "We are not moving fast enough and risk falling short of both short- and long-term climate goals," warns Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines. 3. EU Regulations Under Fire: IATA's Willie Walsh is sceptical of EU's approach, calling for global solutions over regional mandates. He argues that the idea of every country moving at the same pace is unrealistic. 4. SAF: The Critical Factor: Demand outstrips supply, especially in Africa and Asia. SAF is essential for operating current aircraft fleet through 2050. 5. Who Pays? "Ultimately the consumer," says Walsh, but government support is crucial for kickstarting the SAF industry. He calls for accelerated investment to bring down costs. 6. Industry Response: Airlines are investing in SAF production despite it being "madness," according to Walsh. There are calls for a level playing field in SAF pricing and availability, and a push for better government regulations supporting investments. "We have used every single drop of SAF that has been produced. The demand signal is there, it is not a demand challenge but a supply challenge." - Willie Walsh, IATA What's your take? Can aviation achieve net zero by 2050? Should consumers bear the cost of sustainability? ✈️If airports don't start cutting their carbon emissions, airlines might stop using them. It's that simple. Airlines are under pressure to go green and cut down on their carbon footprints. Major airports can emit as much CO2 as a small city. That's a huge amount, from airline operations, energy and ground vehicles. This should be part of a broader effort that includes addressing other environmental impacts and exploring innovative solutions Learn more about the relationship between aviation and climate change alongside the strategies to mitigate its environmental impact with Sustainability Unlocked - xUnlocked and our expert Jonathan Preist Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/ebH9dTVR https://lnkd.in/eYtdvpEv #Aviation #sustainableaviation #ClimateChange #climateaction #CarbonEmissions #CO2 #GreenAviation #SustainableTravel #AviationIndustry #ClimateSolutions #AviationImpact #ClimatePolicy #electricvehicles #sustainabletransport

As the United States government pushes to put the aviation sector on a runway to full decarbonization by 2050, the industry is considering all kinds of novel methods to reduce jet fuel emissions. These include using garbage, grass, fat, starch, sugar, trash, and even rabbit poop, which contains a particular strain of bacteria. A noble effort! And who knows, maybe in the future, our planes will be running on all of these things… For now, however, the most realistic way to reduce airline industry emissions is to have planes burn cleaner fuels, referred to as sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Activate Fellow-founded company Twelve (Etosha Cave and Kendra Kuhl, Cohort 2015) is helping to lead the charge with their innovative E-Jet®, the power-to-liquid SAF made from carbon dioxide. It's fossil-free and has up to 90 percent lower lifecycle emissions than conventional fuel. Twelve has partnered with leaders in aviation and sustainability including the U.S. Airforce, Alaska Airlines, Microsoft, Etihad, Shopify, and IAG to name a few. It’s a testament to how science leaders continue to soar in importance when it comes to solving our biggest emission challenges. https://hubs.la/Q02tQ-Gq0
