Free and accessible ways to optimize your #brainhealth: * Contact with #nature - The practice of #forestbathing has been linked to better physical and #mentalhealth including lower blood pressure and cortisol levels. * Social connection - Loneliness is a risk factor for poor health outcomes including premature mortality. Social #connection has been shown to improve #healthoutcomes and workplace productivity. * Movement - Moderate movement - for example, #walking - increases levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor, promoting the growth of new brain cells. Since the cortisol released during high intensity exercise might counteract the effects of BDNF, it is recommended to incorporate moderate #movement as part of a well-rounded fitness plan. * Environmental health - Indoor plants can help improve our #wellbeing. It's important to remember to intentionally take breaks from the stress! The research is gaining momentum re the importance and power of music and the arts. How wonderful to have the incomparable Renee Fleming as one of the leading proponents, along with many scientists. If you work in healthcare, this book is a must! The science tells the story - read the research!

Very interesting new area of research on music and the mind facilitated by new technologies for brain imaging.

Two exceptional people feature in this photo: on the left Mr. Theo Kelz, the first patient to have a hand transplant in Austria in the year 2000, and on the right Mr Vasyly Rohovyy, who had both hands transplanted in Vienna in 2006. The photo was taken under the portrait of Professor Raimond Margraiter, the former director of the University Clinic of Innsbruck and one of the pioneers of vascular composite allografts (VCA). VCAs involve the transplantation of multiple structures that may include skin, bone, muscles, blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. Face and hand transplants are the most well-known types of VCA. While VCA is not directly relevant to #pulmonaryhypertension, its strides underscore the remarkable advancements witnessed in transplantation over recent decades and serve as a testament to the potential for ongoing developments and enhancements in the field. Music in Medicine! Attended an inspiring and informative conference by the Benjamin Goldberg Foundation 🎼 As an integrative pediatrician who brings music into my therapeutic plans and as a mantra/sound healing teacher in the St Louis community, it was wonderful to connect with others who are doing similar work. 🎶 I heard from physicians (who sing like me :) and music therapists, enjoying experiential sessions on therapeutic song writing and cultural competence in offering music as a healing tool. 🎵 We discussed * Defining the role of the healing arts in patient outcomes. * Examining the scientific basis for incorporating healing arts in medicine. * Evaluating the approach that healing arts therapists use in working with patients. * Describing the role that physicians can play in promoting the healing arts in medicine. 🔍 Addressing Racial Discrimination and Bias in Health Care 🔎 In the latest installation of Race and Medicine published by Healio | HemOnc Today, I had the opportunity to discuss a critical issue in health care: racial discrimination and bias that disproportionately impacts #Black Americans. These issues deeply affect patients' trust in their providers, research, and the health care system as a whole. Recognizing and addressing this problem is essential. It starts with acknowledging its existence and requires urgent action from health care systems. Only by doing this can we begin to close the gaps in health care access and outcomes, particularly for our Black communities. This keynote outlines the relationship between arts and information technology from the very beginning in the fields of clinical and educational applications and human interaction aspects and illustrates the current developments. In particular, this keynote illustrates the use of digital drawing applications i.e. in the prediction of Alzheimer’s disease, to investigate depressive moods, or to detect interpersonal emotional attachment.
