It’s a tough gig, opening the last day of a conference after an awards dinner the night before! But Prof Tim Vorley OBE, Christine Doel and Andrew Carter, ably chaired by John Leake - Sci-Tech Daresbury more than rose to the challenge with a great discussion on innovation clusters. My favourite points were; “Thinking about sectors independently is less helpful than looking at how they relate” and “think of clusters as verbs not nouns”. This led on nicely to a panel I joined (representing #UKInnovationDistrictsGroup) alongside Phil Carvil, Joshua Hawkins, Placi Espejo, Angela Kukula, Philip Macdonald chaired by Jo Stevens, who all know a thing or two about innovation clusters and hotspots! I was taken by how the UK space cluster might offer some valuable insights and potentially a blueprint for what a ‘Team GB approach’ to cluster development can look like in order to operate on a world-wide scale (and beyond!). My main reflections on innovation clusters were: 1. Size isn’t everything 2. Don’t forget the human scale 3. Hotspots in clusters are key 4. What we measure counts 5. Today I popped into the office of ZCCE Zurich Centre for Creative Economies and found the freshly printed edition of the CIRCE - Creative Impact Research Centre Europe Report. 1 year, 5 research labs, 13 impact projects, 40 young fellows across Europe in 180 pages of final report (link to the digital edition in comments). It was a blast being project lead of the Zurich research lab. Together with our researcher we kept exploring entrepreneurial strategies within the #creativeeconomies. Three main findings crystallised in all our studies: 🎯 we don't need four-year strategy plans, we need continuous strategy processes. 🧨 We don't need ex ante definitions of results, but rather high-risk projects.  🎒 We don't need a narrow understanding of resources in terms of financial means, but a holistic view that includes values, governance and stakeholders.
