📚🌊 Mediterranean ecosystems are facing the dramatic impacts of intense human activity and climate change. 🌊 Highlights from the II Transnational Forum on Sea and Sustainability 🌍 We've just wrapped up an incredible two days at the II Transnational Forum in Porto, filled with enriching discussions, inspiring presentations, and meaningful community interactions focused on sustainable coastal development. 👥 Engagement: Over the course of the forum, we connected experts, practitioners, and enthusiasts from around the Atlantic area, each bringing unique insights into blue tourism, sustainable fishing practices, and coastal heritage. 🎥 Here's a look back at some of the most memorable moments: In-depth Discussions: Panels and roundtables delved into the pressing issues facing our seas and shores. Interactive Sessions: Workshops and participatory activities helped translate ideas into actionable strategies. Leaving the bubble of everyday tasks and getting an influx of new ideas feels so energising! I went to the European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO) in Cascais, Portugal. Work has been piling up at my desk, but I am happy, that I decided nevertheless to stay the whole three days. A strong storm and high ocean waves outside proved our own resilience and adaptation capacity. ;-) The event brought a wave of inspiration by discussing the burning topics with cities and experts from all corners in Europe. Seeing resilience through the lense of our Ukrain colleagues or exploring the perspective from our guests from South Africa was revealing and very moving. Resilience goes beyond technical solutions, is also about community, solidarity, trust and passion. I will need some time to go through all my notes, pick up noted down ideas and integrate them in my work. The event was also very moving for me at another personal level. Together with @Holger Robrecht form ICLEI Europe I had the idea to create such an event and forum, where cities talk to cities instead of us experts alone talking about cities. This was in 2012 and a year later we had then our first 1-day event. We have moved far from there. After a decade, the 10th EURESFO has seen more than 400 participants over three days. Looking back, we can state that we have achieved much on urban adaptation and resilience since then. Cities became more reslient, but there is much more to do over the next years and no time to spill. Our action is still not at the scale of the enormous climate impacts that we have again felt this year with new records on heatwaves, forest fires, floods in many European countries. We need to scale up the encouraging action from pioneering cities to all cities and regions in Europe and other parts of our world. Thanks to João Dinis Vasileios Latinos Holger Robrecht Luca C. 🌞 Fresh off from our Second #StudyVisit, here are some of the main take-aways from our three days in Western Greece investigating the topic of Environmental Risks in Rural Areas 🌐Need for strategic planning to manage risks such as climate change-induced disasters like fires and floods. 👨🌾 Need for actions to revitalize rural areas, focusing on holistic approaches covering various sectors like tourism, energy, and mobility, with initiatives support economic, cultural and social development 🤝 Cooperation (locally, regionally, nationally and within the EU) is key to address the challenges faced by rural regions, 💶 Adequate funding to match investment requirements in targeted areas 👨🚒 New approach to Civil Protection: shifting from suppression of risks to fostering continuous interaction between humans and nature for prevention.
