Six years ago, when Intuitive’s Women in da Vinci Surgery Symposium began, there were just six female surgeons in the room. This year? Over 200 surgeons, pulmonologists, and hospital executives gathered in Atlanta, Georgia, to connect, learn, and grow together.
Explore key takeaways from this year’s symposium.

When Dr. Laila Rashidi was asked how she communicates the benefits of robotic surgery to her patients and colleagues, she said, "Whenever I meet referring physicians or talk to my patients, I always have data to support why I'm doing what I'm doing."
In our new Surgeon Spotlight series, we'll be exploring the world of surgery through the eyes of some of the most skilled and knowledgable physicians in the world. Up first, the inimitable Dr. Laila Rashidi, medical director for colon and rectal surgery at MultiCare Health System.
We built Ion on the belief that collecting lung tissue samples for biopsy could be safe and simple, even when lung nodules are small and located in the periphery. Ion’s ultrathin, ultramaneuverable catheter allows clinicians to reach small lesions in all 18 segments of the lung with reach, precision, and stability.
Reimagining the lung cancer patient pathway. That’s Intuitive.
“All of our work is having a huge impact on the lives of everyday people,” says Clinical Research Associate Vivek Miyani. “I feel proud that I get to work on technology that really makes a difference in people’s lives.”
Vivek is part of Intuitive’s Clinical Affairs team, who worked with 100+ healthcare providers on the 53 cases to complete an unprecedented study that secured FDA clearance for the da Vinci 5. It’s our most advanced and integrated robotic surgery system—ever.
And to make it possible, the Clinical Affairs team managed the most complex and expedient clinical research project in the company’s history. Now, their greatest win is seeing how da Vinci 5 enables surgeons as they care for patients.

For many of us at Intuitive, our commitment to patient care is personal. For John Coyne, our VP of Brand and Creative, this commitment became a reality when he faced a health challenge himself. An avid hiker and cyclist, John experienced severe pain that required da Vinci surgery to repair an inguinal hernia.
John's journey with Intuitive began a year earlier, driven by his daughter’s dedication as a nurse practitioner. "This was a place where I could make a difference in my own way," John shares. "At Intuitive, we are at the forefront of healthcare and technology."
Choosing da Vinci surgery was an easy decision for John after speaking with Dr. Beemen Khalil, MD, MS, FACS at Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital—and knowing that his colleagues made this technology possible. "The passion and the unbelievable engineering and technical prowess of everyone that works at this company gave me great confidence," John says.
As we observe National Hernia Awareness Month, John reflects on how this innovative robotic system enabled his return to the activities he loves. “It's crucial for patients to know that da Vinci surgery is an option,” John emphasizes.
