The classification society ABS endowed several AiPs during Gastech 2024 for proposals aimed at advancing sustainable energy solutions. This signals a green flag for several ammonia-related projects, such as autonomous technologies for ammonia-fueled ships and the initial design of an ammonia bunkering articulated tug barge. ABS has granted a subset of the SBM offshore group, Imodco, the go-ahead. The jetty-less system proposed by Imodco will utilize the Tower Loading Unit and Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring soft yoke systems, which will enhance safety and efficiency by moving the ammonia transfers away from the shore. Imodco has set its sights on continuing its collaboration with ABS in its pursuit of global energy transition, much like the multi-year offshore technology collaboration agreement between ABS and the shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean. #imodco #ammonia #absclassification #gastech #autonomous #tugbarge #towerloading

The vessel will run on battery power alone for extended periods, utilising innovative recharging technology and dual-fuel methanol engines to achieve zero-emission operations. Mitsubishi & Nihon launch joint LCO2 carrier study for Japan's CCS projects Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., a Tokyo-based joint venture for ship design and sales between Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Japan Marine United Corporation, have signed an MOU with Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation on the collaborative study for ocean-going liquified CO2 (LCO2) carriers to realise large-scale international transportation in Japan initiated CCS (Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage) from 2028 onwards. The four companies will proceed with this initiative, aiming to apply it at the future commencement of CCS business led by the Japanese government. 🚢🌍 South Korea Begins Construction of Groundbreaking Large LCO2 Carriers 🌱⚓ HD Hyundai Mipo has officially started building its first Large Liquefied CO2 (LCO2) Carriers, marking a significant milestone in the emerging market for carbon transport. These vessels are not only the first of their kind in South Korea but also larger than any similar #ships currently being built in China. This ambitious project kicked off at Hyundai's Ulsan shipyard with steel cutting for the first of four LCO2 carriers ordered by Greece’s Capital Maritime Group. These state-of-the-art vessels, equipped with advanced pressure control #technology, are designed to meet the rising demand for carbon capture and storage. Key features include: > Three Bi-lobe type CO2 storage tanks with a total capacity of 22,000 cbm, far surpassing the 7,500 cbm tanks in similar vessels. > The ability to maintain a stable, low-temperature, high-pressure environment, crucial for safely transporting liquefied CO2. > Versatility to transport liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or ammonia in addition to LCO2. > Ice-resistant hull (Ice Class 1C) and ammonia-ready design for future fuel flexibility. > Shore power units and SCR nitrogen oxide reduction devices for lower emissions. The first of these innovative vessels is scheduled for delivery in November 2025, with the remaining ships to follow through 2026. Collaboration for Advanced Zero-Carbon Ships ABS and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to drive innovation for zero-carbon ships. Announced at Gastech 2024, the partnership will focus on three key technologies: a novel LNG cargo handling system to reduce boil-off gas for zero-carbon carriers, an advanced ammonia fuel supply system for large vessels, and an integrated system to enhance re-liquefaction with cold ammonia. Both companies aim to accelerate decarbonization in shipping, combining ABS’s expertise in sustainability with HD KSOE’s technical innovations to develop next-generation, zero-emission vessels.

The devices will be used to upgrade the ships’ existing Wärtsilä controllable pitch propeller system, resulting in an estimated 5% in fuel savings. By reducing the fuel consumption of these existing MR tankers, INSW will strengthen its actions towards decarbonised operations and continue to meet its Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) requirements. “As a company dedicated to supporting the marine industry’s decarbonisation efforts, we are delighted to cooperate with International Seaways in improving the fuel efficiency of these four vessels. Valued at KRW 342 billion ($256 million), this deal represents the highest-priced vessels ordered by the company in 16 years.
