Decarbonisation is a pressing challenge for shipping. With 2050 only one vessel lifetime away, vessels must be flexible enough to adapt to changing needs in the future. Electric shipping, or ship electrification, is one of the key solutions available today to help the industry meet its decarbonisation goals. If you're heading to ONS next week, don't miss out on the opportunity to see, first-hand, how clean energy is powering the future (more details below 👇) In the meantime, read more about electric shipping: https://lnkd.in/duMxpTFK

At Wärtsilä, we understand that industry-wide collaboration lies at the heart of marine decarbonisation. That is why are proud to be partnering with Compagnie Maritime Monégasque (CMM) on this MoU to develop the first PSV powered by ethanol. In the words of Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine & ExecuIve Vice President at Wärtsilä Corporation: "We are fully aligned with CMM’s vision to accelerate the maritime industry towards net-zero emissions shipping, with this agreement only cementing our commitment towards pioneering solutions which enable a more sustainable future.” Find out more 👇

CMM has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Wärtsilä to develop the first Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) powered by ethanol. This pioneering initiative is built on a collaborative design concept that leverages Wärtsilä's versatile mulI-fuel engine platform, the Wärtsilä 32. This partnership underscores both companies' commitment to significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.   In a significant development in February 2024, Wärtsilä conducted ground-breaking testing at their Vaasa, Finland, laboratory using ethanol as the primary fuel in a full-scale Wärtsilä 32 engine. These tests confirmed the engine's capability to operate efficiently on a range of fuels, including diesel, biodiesel, heavy fuel oil (HFO), methanol, and ethanol. CMM has secured preliminary financial approval from the Brazilian Merchant Marine Fund (FMM) to construct 10 Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) in Brazil. Incorporating ethanol into these vessels’ operational strategy aligns with CMM’s vision to develop a fleet of greener vessels for operations both in Brazil and internationally.   CMM’s agreement with Wärtsilä sets a rapid timeline for the construction of the first vessel, marking a significant step towards the industrial application of the Wärtsilä 32 on a multi-fuel platform. Both companies are poised to lead the maritime industry towards a more sustainable future.   Statement from Christophe Vancauwenbergh, CEO of Compagnie Maritime Monegasque: “We are very happy with this collaboration with Wärtsilä to develop the world’s first ethanol-powered application for the marine industry. We intend to build these vessels in Brazil, ensuring that our customers’ operations can achieve substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, thereby presenting a feasible alternative towards a greener future for the maritime industry.”   Statement from Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine & ExecuIve Vice President at Wärtsilä Corporation:   “With shipping firms under increasing pressure to decarbonize their operations, we, at Wärtsilä, remain dedicated to the development and testing of technologies and solutions aimed for low and zero-carbon marine fuels. We are fully aligned with CMM’s vision to accelerate the maritime industry towards net-zero emissions shipping, with this agreement only cementing our commitment towards pioneering solutions which enable a more sustainable future.”

In the words of our very own Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine and EVP of Wärtsilä: “We need to future-proof the shipping industry” As an industry responsible for transporting over 80% of world trade, maritime shipping serves as the lifeblood of the global economy. However, in just 25 years – the lifetime of a single vessel – shipping needs to get to net zero emissions.  This week, Roger joined Sumit Bose, founder and host of the Net Hero podcast, to discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by shipping, in line with current and upcoming regulation and policy, as well as the solutions available today for ship operators to make emission cuts. In particular, Roger highlighted the importance of investing in fuel flexibility: “Recently, we have gone from a single-fuel environment to a multi-fuel environment. [New engine technology] gives you the flexibility to change the ship during the lifetime of the vessel, which is necessary for us to get to net zero by 2050. You can invest in a ship now that runs on LNG today and then when green fuels become widely available, you can convert the engine to run on green methanol or green ammonia, for example.” Watch the full podcast here: https://lnkd.in/epDZv2w4 #Maritime #Shipping #NetZero #Decarbonisation #Innovation
