Boeing Aerostructures Australia, Australia's sole designer and manufacturer of advanced composite aerostructure components for commercial airplanes, is investing in apprenticeship programs to address skills shortages and changing demographics. Recognising the significance of on-the-job training, Managing Director and a former engineering cadet at Boeing Mick Sorrenson highlights the company's commitment to growing the talent pipeline, “If you're passionate about aerospace, it becomes all-encompassing and all of a sudden you realise you've been here for 35 years and not ever really thought about having to change because you love what you're doing.” The initiative includes a women in aerospace program aimed at increasing female representation in manufacturing. Boeing plans to expand its apprenticeship program to include 40 apprentices over the next four years, fostering diversity and creating a workforce that better reflects the community. Situated in Melbourne's Fishermans Bend, Boeing Aerostructures Australia boasts a rich legacy in Australian aviation dating back to its predecessor companies in 1927. Our focus is driving skills and cultivating the engineering leaders of tomorrow. Did you know - Boeing forecasts a need for 60,000 new maintenance technicians globally in the next 20 years – that's 30,000 annually! With Europe's fleet size representing 25% of the world's active fleet, approximately 7,500 new technicians are required each year. And guess what - The UK ranks 5th in Europe for passenger numbers, meaning a significant portion of those 7,500 technicians are needed right here. However, current talent pipelines fall short of these numbers, underscoring the importance of engaging and influencing the next generation of aviation talent and leveraging apprenticeship routes to bolster skills development in this critical sector. BAE Systems and the University of Portsmouth launch the UK's inaugural degree apprenticeship in space engineering. This innovative program promises to blend academic excellence with hands-on experience, preparing the next wave of talent for the rapidly expanding space sector. Starting as a K-tech AS apprentice at 17, she's now a Receiving Controller, ensuring the quality of parts for F-35 aircraft and advanced defence systems. Her journey is a testament to dedication and hard work. "It's incredibly gratifying to receive this level of trust. It’s a significant responsibility. We need to inspect for any general damage, check the quality of paint and masking, ensure that parts are manufactured correctly, and most importantly, confirm that they meet our delivery standards,” Signe says. While apprenticeships and similar programs are pivotal for bridging this gap, there’s an innovative solution we shouldn’t overlook—game engine-powered factory digital twins. These advanced simulations not only offer a realistic training ground for apprentices but also provide a comprehensive exposure to the intricacies of aerospace manufacturing. By integrating digital twins into training programs, companies can enhance learning experiences, simulate real-world scenarios without the risks, and prepare a workforce that’s ready to tackle the challenges of modern manufacturing.
