In 2020, Dragonfly Aerospace launched with a clear mission: to provide decision-makers with precise, easily accessible data. As Bryan Dean, Group CEO and Co-Founder, puts it: “Our goal is to use this technology to improve lives on Earth.” The company specialises in compact, high-performance imaging payloads (the part of the satellite responsible for collecting data or transmitting information), creating expansive imaging networks that offer constant views of Earth in various spectrums. This data provides critical business insights and helps improve lives globally. Based in Stellenbosch, Dragonfly Aerospace also contributes to space exploration, supporting NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration missions and lunar projects. Despite challenges, such as the lack of government-funded space initiatives, Dean believes South African space companies' resilience sets them apart. “The industry would definitely grow more with government projects and grants, which we have received practically zero of for a long time,” Dean notes. “But our resilience is our strength. Without government safety nets, we must be agile and competitive globally.” This agility, Dean adds, distinguishes South African space companies. “We fight hard for every bit of revenue,” he explains. “It has made us tough and agile. We might be one of the only truly commercial space industries in the world because we have no government support. It sounds negative, but it has made us stronger.” For more on Dragonfly’s journey, check out pages 12-13 in the latest edition of Wesgro’s Pioneers Magazine: https://lnkd.in/dfjwuHZF #SpaceTech #CommercialSpace #Innovation

More good news out of the LBC. Innovative companies come to the City of Long Beach to create and be part of a new aerospace entrepreneurial ecosystem. Great job Mayor Rex Richardson, Deputy Mayor of Economic Development, Lucius Martin and the City's Economic Development team headed by Economic Development Director, Bo Martinez for their great work, attracting new businesses to the LBC. For those nerds that are curious what makes Rocket Lab's so different, (full disclosure, the following is an AI generated summary.) "Rocket Lab's Electron stands out in the small satellite launch market due to its lightweight design and innovative Rutherford engines, which are the first electric-pump-fed engines for an orbital-class rocket. Compared to other small-lift launch vehicles, Electron is the third most launched in history, offering reliable and frequent access to space. Its use of liquid oxygen (LOx) and rocket-grade kerosene (RP-1) as propellants also contributes to its efficiency and performance." #SpaceBeach, #entrepreneurship, #entrepreneurialecosystem, #startups The Aerospace Corporation Space Force Association GE Aerospace Space Command AU Honeywell Aerospace Technologies Air & Space Forces Association NADDSO (National Association of Drone Developers & Space Organizations) Space Business Association Start-Ups Army Space Professionals Association The Corps Chapter Southeast European Space Association (SESA) GKN Aerospace Aerospace Industries Association Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) Aerospace Industry Association of Michigan (AIAM) Aerospace Engineering Association, IIT Madras ACA /Aerospace Cluster Association (HUKD) Aerospace Industries Association of the Philippines Orion Aerospace Association
News out of Space Beach (the City of Long Beach) as Rocket Lab successfully completes their “Owl for One, One for Owl” mission for Synspective Inc. marking their 51st Electron launch. Congrats to the entire team at Rocket Lab! #spacebeach #growlongbeach #rocketlab https://lnkd.in/gAYvjnHU
