Climate change and diabetes are two important global problems that only at first glance seem to have nothing to do with each other. The impact of the climate crisis can influence the treatment and prevalence of diabetes. What used to be called the "summer of the century" or the "flood of the century" is now occurring with increasing frequency. Extreme temperatures but also extreme weather events have an impact on glucose metabolism. Studies show that one degree increase in temperature leads to 100,000 new cases of diabetes. Heat waves can increase hospital admissions of diabetic patients due to impaired glucose tolerance. Anthropogenic activities worsen air quality, increase particulate matter and ozone levels, all of which can also cause cellular damage. In the escalating climate crisis, we are experiencing devastating forest fires, which can directly increase the incidence of diabetes. On this World Environment Day, it's important to recognize the significant impact climate change has on our health. As highlighted in a recent article by News9Live, climate change is linked to several diseases. Among these, the risk of hypothyroidism is of particular concern. Changes in temperature and environmental stressors can disrupt thyroid function, leading to a range of health issues. Thyroid medications are already the most prescribed drug in the country, growing at a high 5% CAGR. Could climate change be the sole reason?
