🌟 Celebrating Black History Month: Tips for Companies 🌟 As we honor Black History Month, it's essential for companies to recognize the significance of this observance and actively contribute to fostering inclusion & belonging in the workplace. Here are some valuable tips to help your organization celebrate and support Black history and culture: 1️⃣ Educate and Raise Awareness: Host workshops, webinars, or lunch-and-learns focusing on the history, achievements, and contributions of Black individuals and communities. Encourage open dialogue and reflection among employees. 2️⃣ Amplify Black Voices: Provide platforms for Black employees to share their stories, experiences, and perspectives. Amplify Black voices not just during Black History Month, but year-round through internal communications, social media, and company events. 3️⃣ Support Black-Owned Businesses: Partner with and showcase Black-owned businesses through vendor relationships, collaborations, or spotlight features. Investing in Black entrepreneurship strengthens communities and promotes economic equity. 4️⃣ Foster Inclusive Leadership: Train managers and leaders on cultural competency and inclusive leadership practices. Encourage them to actively listen to the needs of Black employees, advocate for their advancement, and create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. 5️⃣ Volunteer and Give Back: Engage in community service or volunteer initiatives that support organizations working towards racial justice and equality. Black History Month Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Brandon J. Manning Q: How does your book relate and advocate for Black History Month?    A: When Carter G. Woodson first created Negro week it was to ensure that history would include the contributions of Black people. My first book, Played out: The Race Man in 21st Century Satire, chronicled the contributions of Black satirists and the work they did disrupting and laughing at race and gender politics. I’d like to think of the book as a different kind of archive that charted Black men’s satirical investment in dismantling the trope of the Race Man, a messianic leader and spokesperson of Black America. Q: How does your book showcase Black excellence?   A: The book in many ways is interested in charting the opposite of Black excellence, at least in the ways that the term is taken up. The book follows satires that are full of anti-heroes, Black men that don’t live up to a particular standard of Blackness and/or masculinity that is advanced by racial and gender economies. Instead, these protagonists become sites of vulnerability and interiority and attempt to change society’s perception of Black men in public spaces. Q: What does Black History Month mean to you?   A: Black History month reminds me of how far America has come in accepting Black people’s humanity and how much further we still have to go. #tcuenglish

Honoring #BlackHistoryMonth! As we kick off February, we want to commend the rich tapestry of African American heritage, culture, and achievements that have shaped history. For 2024, the theme of Black History Month is “African Americans and the Arts.” To recognize this year’s theme as we continue our focus on fostering an inclusive environment and growing in our journey of allyship, Breaktime will be starting a movie club that focuses on a film on Black history. At the end of the month, we’ll be hosting a happy hour to have a thoughtful discussion on the film and discuss ways we can amplify the voices of the African American community. Throughout the month, we’ll also be showcasing the brilliance of Black poets and their contributions to literature. Internally, we’ll be sharing the works of these poets to deepen our understanding and appreciation for their work in Black history. Together, let’s make Black History Month a time of reflection, education, and unity. Her creation, the Gong and Signal Chair for hotels, revolutionized service by allowing patrons to quietly alert staff with the press of a button, a precursor to systems used in various service industries today. Benjamin's invention not only showcased her innovative spirit but also her dedication to improving efficiency and communication in public spaces. Her legacy as an inventor and pioneer serves as an inspiring example of how creativity and determination can lead to impactful advancements, paving the way for future generations of inventors. Today marks the start of Black History Month—an annual commemoration of Black History as well as recognition of the ongoing achievements of African Americans in all realms of society. Originally conceived as a celebratory week by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926, it was expanded to a full month in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. The energy industry has a below-average representation of Black workers; 8% of energy workers are Black or African American compared to a 12% national workforce average. Our sector still has work to do to reach its inclusion goals, but through our partnership with the Ron Brown Scholar Program as well as initiatives like the Clean Energy Crash Course, Apex is working to create specific opportunities for African Americans in the energy transition. As Black History Month for 2024 concludes, we are sharing the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture’s 5th and final theme for the month: Digital Arts. The associated digital arts exhibit, Afrofuturism, expresses notions of Black identity, agency and freedom through art, creative works and advocacy that envision liberated futures for Black lives.   Highlighting over 100 artifacts from music, film, television, comic books, fashion, theater, literature, and more, the museum's latest exhibition spans over a century of Afrofuturism's diverse history of expression. It delves into the profound impact and influence this movement has had on American culture. Explore the stories of five remarkable Black icons who played pivotal roles in shaping Afrofuturism through their activism, artistry, and humanity. Additionally, you can dive deeper into Afrofuturism through true stories, playlists, and testing your knowledge through quizzes.   Black History Month provides an opportunity for conversation about historical activism, discrimination, and the progress of equality.
