Chairman @ Autonomy Institute | Industry 4.0 Fellow: Building Intelligent Infrastructure Economic Zones ARPA-I

Fantastic leadership from Tony Tether with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Autonomous Grand Challenge. Exceptional work has advanced the vehicle with sensors, software, computing, AI algorithms, and safety features. Time to get "Street Smart" and deploy INTELLIGENT INFRASTRUCTURE, providing the Sixth Sense required for safe and scaled operations. The Federal Infrastructure Bank and infrastructure investors are mobilizing $billions in private capital to underwrite Intelligent Infrastructure Economic Zones. https://lnkd.in/gWnJD877 Trying to deploy autonomous systems without INTELLIGENT INFRASTRUCTURE is like trying to build the Internet without networks. Replacing our Carbon-Based Brains with Silicon versions treats the symptoms, not the problems. The fundamental challenges of mobility are optimization, orchestration, reducing emissions, and addressing Vision Zero. Intelligent infrastructure can only address the Root Challenges. “The focus should not be on individual cars, but rather on the ecosystem so that everyone can move efficiently and safely.” David Bruemmer We have known for over 20 years that safer and more optimized mobility was highly dependent on INTELLIGENT INFRASTRUCTURE to end these horrific metrics: 900,000+ Deaths, 50+ Million injuries, and $10+ trillion in economic loss. INTELLIGENT INFRASTRUCTURE (the foundation of ARPA-I) goes well beyond transportation and will be the brains of our economy. Providing advanced city services, resilient and carbon-free economies, closing the technology divide, enabling autonomous systems, and most important; securing data for people, cities, and governments. Creating millions of new jobs and economic growth nationwide. Twenty years ago today, the inaugural DARPA Grand Challenge set the stage for the self-driving industry we know today. Nobody won, but it was far from a flop. Then-DARPA director Tony Tether, Carnegie Mellon University's Red Whittaker, Pronto's Anthony Levandowski and Waymo's Melanie Dumas Grimm all shared their recollections for this story:

Nobody won. Nobody finished. Yet the first DARPA race left an indelible mark
