The fields of proposal writing, resource mobilization, donor relations, and donor management are often feared and intimidating to start-ups and CBOs still putting their structures in order. The fear is often due to several factors, including fear of rejection, history of rejection, limited experience and skills in proposal writing, limited donor information, and lack of meaningful networks. Akili Dada has brought together women CEOs for an ODSS training targeting organizations from the ASAL regions of Kenya, where we have had the opportunity to acquire knowledge tied to Organizational Strengthening on thematic topics of Resource Mobilization, Leadership hats, and managing teams, Financial management, Project management, Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Communications and Branding, Board management and several other topics which have equipped us with skills necessary to Lead organizations effectively. Just returned from an inspiring week in Uganda 🇺🇬, where I had the privilege of delivering the keynote address for both the Institute of Internal Auditors - Uganda's 15th Annual Board & Audit Committee Workshop and their 18th Annual Internal Audit Conference. The room buzzed with passionate leaders committed to good governance. Throughout my career, a persistent challenge has haunted me: the lack of diversity in leadership and boardrooms across Africa. This reality stands in stark contrast to the very foundation of good governance – the principle of "by the people, for the people." I challenged them with a critical message: Africa's young generation and women are the continent's untapped potential. Why is this so important? 1. Africa boasts the world's youngest population, brimming with fresh ideas and tech-savvy solutions. Yet, leadership positions remain dominated by older generations. This disconnect hinders progress. 2. Studies show companies with diverse leadership outperform their less diverse counterparts. Imagine the potential if we tap into the full spectrum of African talent! 3. By empowering young leaders and women, we unlock a wave of innovation and propel Africa towards a brighter future. IDENTIFYING DYSFUNCTIONAL BOARDS IN OUR CSO SECTOR IN KENYA: In my many years in senior management in this sector, I have had the privilege of being secretary to Boards by being the ED as well as being a member of several boards locally and internationally. I have identified 3 characteristics of dysfunctional Boards: Rubber Stamp Board. This type of board approves whatever management proposes and often plays the role of cheerleader. These organizations tend to be run by charismatic chief executives who value their autonomy and assemble a board with the expectation that its members are compliant and mainly serve as “window dressing” to reassure external stakeholders. Micromanaging Board. This board takes on key management functions in addition to its proper governing role. The staff becomes disempowered and often passive (or passive-aggressive) in the face of repeated intrusions into what they rightfully expect would be their areas of authority. Balkanized Board. These boards consist of people who are concerned about only one part of the organization—often the program they support financially. They typically avoid trying to see how all the pieces of an organization fit together, leaving that task solely to the chief executive. The fragmentation can be dangerous when an organization's revenues; funding or reputation shrink and priorities must be reevaluated quickly and holistically. Who can Identify with these Boards?

🌍 Last week, Dr. Catherine had the pleasure of speaking with 35 senior professionals from six African countries—Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Rwanda—who were shortlisted for her Mentorship and Coaching Program in Consulting. Out of 142 applicants, these 35 were selected for interviews. Average people dedicate a lot of time to hyper distraction activities while high performing individuals dedicate their time to hyperfocus. 4. Positive energy enlarges your circle of influence. 5. Understanding the requirements of the donors in the industry and equipping people as well as processes is the primer for achieving the goal. It has been a wonderful journey to understand the bits and pieces of proposal development for USAID; and a plethora of reading and reviews of the references has enriched me with information, knowledge, and wisdom. Understanding NOFO/RFA/RFP is very important, a team of personnel having the necessary skillset is a blessing for the organization. Roles and responsibility matrix are inevitable in the process along with the activity calendar for a satisfactory outcome. Only rigorous review and editing could ensure a state-of-the-art proposal. Collaboration with range of stakeholders, local organizations, implementers, and active as well as meaningful participation of community in the development proragmmes could potentially raise the bar. Innovation, creativity, and uniqueness in the prorgamme design are the core elements to stand out from the crowd. Overall, to achieve such overarching tasks, perseverance, attention to detail, and scholarly leadership would be valuable. Nonetheless, a positive attitude to learn both from success and failure through constructive reflection could immensely benefit people, the organization, and the culture. #proposaldevelopment #workshop #usaid #humentum
