April is Fair Housing Month! Safe, fair and equitable access to housing has been a cornerstone to human and civil rights, economic power, education and is a critical social determinant of health. Almost 60 percent of American wealth is built through home equity; owning a home opens doors to credit, education and investment opportunities. For Black and brown communities, homeownership is *the primary vehicle for generational wealth*. But a continuing legacy of housing discrimination stifles many families dreams.
On April 18th at the Nj State Bar Assn's Real Estate Conference, I will be discussing NJDCR’s Home Appraisal Initiative – a one of a kind state based project focused on eradicating appraisal bias through enforcement, policy, and community education and engagement. Join me and my fellow panelists to discuss this and much more information.
Importantly, if you or someone you know believes they are experiencing bias because of their race/gender/national origin/religion/gender identity and more, contact me at Appraisals@njcivilrights.gov!
