Making the travel industry more sustainable is incredibly important in today’s society – not only does it help us create a healthier planet, but it also helps businesses meet their targets when it comes to CO2 emissions 🌿   That’s why it’s great to hear that LanzaJet, with support from British Airways, is opening the world’s first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) facility in Georgia. ✈️✈️ Jet2 to use SAF at Stansted ✈️✈️ Jet2.com will use a blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at London Stansted Airport this year, meaning the leisure airline will use SAF on departing flights from two UK airports in 2024, almost a year ahead of the UK’s Government’s SAF mandate which is due to be introduced from 2025. The UK’s third largest airline has purchased approximately 650 tonnes of SAF from Shell Aviation, which will be used to add a 1% SAF blend onto a number of departing flights from London Stansted Airport this year. #SAF#EmissionsCompliance#Sustainability#ReFuelEU#NonCO2#EnvironmentalImpact#Innovation

👣 Every BIG journey starts with a small step – a 100 % SAF-flight is such a step!   ❌ Currently regulations do not allow to airlines to fly on 100 % SAF. The maximum amount allowed is 50 %. To close that gap some pioneers and dedication is needed. Luckily there are quite some of those out there!     🥇 Already last year, the world’s first commercial flight operated with 100 % SAF in both engines took place in Sweden. The airline BRA was behind this great achievement, conducting a regional flight between Stockholm and Malmö in June 2022.     💯 And just recently, the 28 of November, we could follow Virgin Atlantic crossing the Atlantic with 100 % SAF in the tanks. The flight, a Boeing 787, took off from London Heathrow and landed in New York JFK.     👉 Some call this greenwashing – I call this pioneering 👩🔬     We need people and companies pushing boundaries to accelerate the developments.     ✈ The very first commercial flight with some SAF in the tanks took place already 2011 and was conducted by KLM. Ever since KLM have been engaged in the developments of SAF and have also been running engine tests with 100 % SAF.     To increase the use of SAF is key to make aviation more sustainable. And it will be one of the most important contributors for a long time, even if we see new technologies on the horizon. Aviation: The significant polluter to clean up its image. If airline industry was a country, it would be the 10th largest polluter in the world. Very happy to see that our home carrier SAS - Scandinavian Airlines is at the top of this list! 🥇 I am currently on my way back from a business trip to the US. I believe that traveling is important for business and for leisure. To connect people, cultures, and allow for experiences that the digital world does not offer. At the same time, I fully acknowledge that we are in a climate crisis and aviation must transition to sustainable technologies to earn its right to continue operation in the furture. Traveling and flying is not a problem in itself, but the climate impact of flying - in its current form - is unsustainable and unacceptable. Therefore in Copenhagen Optimization, when we fly with our home carrier, SAS, we have decided to always buy 100% sustainable aviation fuels (#SAF). This reduces the CO2 emissions of flying with up to 80%. ♻️ From the numbers below, it is clear that there is still a long way to go, but SAF demand and production is growing and SAS is leading the way to sustainable aviation - the only option for the future. 💪
