Knowledgeable experts estimate (min 25) that in the next decade the chance of a 1941 style war in the Indo-Pacific at around 10% Canadians and Canadian political leaders (all parties) must start taking defence seriously. Our parasitic defence strategy must end. https://lnkd.in/eBkk7J9E

Had an great time on the Revolution in Military Affairs Podcast with Amos Fox, Ph.D. and Michael Burgoyne! We dove into some big ideas around maximizing the value of Foreign Area Officers (FAOs) and shared a few stories along the way. Mike and I unpacked our article Five Truths for Foreign Area Officers (https://lnkd.in/eXz3BeFU). And, yes, we couldn’t resist sharing a wild story about wandering in Sendero Luminoso territory in Peru - definitely not your average day at the office! Key takeaway: In-region training is critical for FAOs - it provides real-world insights that virtual or stateside programs can’t match. Yet, every few years, there’s talk of scrapping it.

Keeping Israelis in the dark about Palestinian casualties and the overwhelming destruction of Gaza is an immoral and failed strategy. It guarantees that Israelis will be clueless about why the rest of the world is so angry with them. Soon, the people of Israel will realize that Netanyahu has once again totally failed them. YOU CAN READ THIS FOR FREE. ----------------- TEL AVIV—Every evening on TV news, Israelis get the latest on the Gaza war—cease-fire and hostage talks, Israeli military casualties, battlefield analysis and coverage of the Oct. 7 attacks by Islamist militant group Hamas that sparked the conflict. One thing that is almost always missing: the people of Gaza. Israel is watching one war unfold in Gaza, while much of the rest of the world is seeing a different one, with footage of the destruction caused by Israeli airstrikes in the densely populated enclave and sometimes gruesome images of Palestinians killed in the fighting. That split screen helps explain the widening gulf between an Israel that feels isolated and misunderstood and outsiders who have shifted their attention from the horrors of Oct. 7 to the damage inflicted by Israel’s campaign to destroy Hamas. That gap in perspective could grow in coming weeks if Israel’s military expands its effort to destroy the remaining Hamas battalions in the crowded southern Gaza city of Rafah. On Israeli television, there is virtually no footage of dead Palestinians and only some scenes of the destruction, according to media executives, journalists, media analysts and ordinary Israelis. Many Israeli Jews, who usually consume news in Hebrew, also say they rarely come across explicit footage of Gaza on their smartphones, though they are aware there has been widespread destruction and a high death toll. Nearly two-thirds of Israeli Jews said they had seen a few or no images of the damage, according to an April survey by the Israel Democracy Institute, a nonpartisan research center. Just over a third said they had seen a lot, either through Israeli media or social media. “You see everything about the war on Israeli television except for the people of Gaza,” said Shuki Tausig, editor of the Seventh Eye, an Israeli publication that focuses on the country’s media. “Right now, Israeli media can’t cope with a complex reality. They know that their viewers don’t really want to see images of their enemy dying, so they just don’t show it.” On Israeli television, there is virtually no footage of dead Palestinians and only some scenes of the destruction, according to media executives, journalists, media analysts and ordinary Israelis. Author, Asia Power Watch, Homeland Security Today, NATO COE / Terrorism, Lecturer at ASPI Forum, Author: Narrative Warfare, Primer & Study Guide, Modern Day Minutemen and Women, The Art of Influence: Narrative Strategy
This post is critically important to the US and NATO national security communities. While that it is common to use the terms narrative and AI in proposals for defense contracts, to date, none publicly announced have the slightest idea about narrative. There are countless brilliant and committed patriots trying to solve our problems with forty years of failure in the influence community but marketing terms that they claim to understand for sales purposes, will only lead to more decades of abject failure in the influence community. As always, I am neither looking for a job nor contract but if someone never tells the emperor that he’s without wardrobe, how will he know? The influence community is without a serious success since the end of the Cold War, other than within niche communities. The gibberish that passes for doctrine, is fully ignorant of #NarrativeWarfare. It we don’t stop the disgraceful nepotism within defense contacting and demand real results for countless tax dollars, there will be no Western Democracy left to protect. Technology is nothing more than a supporting tool to true influence expertise. The US natsec community doesn’t even teach influence. They teach capabilities or tools. Until they remove their nepotistic contracting methods from the SOP, western democracy is at severe risk. I’m a practitioner and there are damn few of us. Somehow, no one in decision making, gives a damn about experience and believe that a PhD is all that is required. I will soon be in the beltway for a few days. I will gladly tell any responsible entity the truth for free. Why are all of the decision-makers and contractors afraid of hearing from experience? No one at OSD demonstrates even the basics of campaigning or #NarrativeWarfare. My successes are documented. More than any alleged expert can say. Surely, you are not afraid of a grumpy old Warrant Officer are you? To my knowledge, there is not one single experienced influence practitioner in any of the currently announced programs. WTH! What contracting most models in the past four decades, is failure. Yes, this is tough to hear but look at the consequences for more failure. The US and West are utter failures at Narrative Warfare. It's killing both "sides" in Israel and Gaza.

ISRAEL’S LONG WAR by Cliff May Blog excerpts: "The war Hamas launched against Israel on Oct. 7 is unlikely to end soon." "Hamas is still firing missiles. It still has snipers in schools and mosques, and trigger-pullers blending in with civilians on Gaza’s streets." "Its two top military commanders, Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif, are believed to have surrounded themselves with hostages deep in the elaborate tunnel network constructed over the years since Israelis withdrew from Gaza." "But Israel is changing the way it fights. The first phase was an air campaign targeting buildings in which – and under which – Hamas had command-and-control centers and armories." "In the second phase, Israeli infantry engaged in grueling urban combat. Phase III is to be lower intensity with fewer boots on the ground. Elite units will conduct special operations. More tunnels will be destroyed. Attempts to rescue hostages will continue." "The goal remains unchanged: to cripple Hamas’ military and governing capabilities."

How does the media influence public opinion and perceptions during times of conflict? What are the contrasting roles of traditional media, like television, and the challenges digital media poses in shaping narratives during conflicts? How diverse audiences can be reached through various platforms, highlighting the importance of tailored messaging. How significant are television interviews in conveying the situation's complexity in minutes? Special thanks to Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Peter Lerner, international media spokesperson at the IDF, for discussing these topics and others in our MA class. It was a great pleasure to learn from your knowledge and experience. #socialmedia #medianarratives #messagedesign
