Not only that, I also outside of work, use to talk about work, think about work stuff, and use to associate things in my personal life with work. 'I am' is such a powerful statement. So, consider this: Who would you be if you weren't in the job you are in right now? What would you do if you weren't doing what you do now? Who are you outside and separate from work? Looking for your next role in the payroll industry? Do you have advanced systems experience with the latest versions of the popular payroll packages for SMB's (Small to Medium Businesses) ? Are you totally up-to-date with the latest legislative changes? If so - there are many employers seeking your skills! Good payroll people are hard to find! It is getting more & more competitive out there - so that whatever you can do to stand out – you should do. I have made it my own skillset to be able to market myself over the years as a "Payroll Systems Specialist". I have always been adept at marketing myself so here are some pointers: One of the stand-out tips would be -   if you had a time when you completed an extra-ordinary role – make sure that this is showcased in the top part of your resume under “Payroll Skills” A prime example of this would be that I worked as NZ Payroll Project Leader setting up the NZ Blueprint for #GE using #ADP a few years ago – but if this distinction was hidden in the body of my resume – I could understand why I might be “overlooked” for similar project roles if my last few roles were “Payroll Officer or “Payroll Administrator” Your resume is your chance to shine – so here are another three of my own tips to stand out: 💥Less is more – do not put the basic parts of your role on your resume 💥As this post is payroll focussed – include a summary of your payroll systems used and the versions – this will really make you stand out! 💥 Use power words where appropriate ie “managed” “created” I am building a team of “Payroll Whizzards” in all facets of payroll - if you would like to join - please let me know! Early in my career, as an HR Generalist I started out in a role where timekeeping/payroll was my main focus and there were two other areas where I was tasked with supporting the HR Managers. Once I became proficient in my payroll role, which was my primary responsibility, I began to take over full responsibility of the other areas where I was only expected to support. I grew in the role I was in through taking the initiative to expand the scope of my role which set me up for future opportunities. If you want to experience growth in your career, but you feel that the only way you can do that is to change roles, get a promotion (title change), or leave the company you are with, I challenge you to re-imagine what you can do in the role you are in. How can you transform your ways of working? What opportunities are there to implement automation so that you can make room for new responsibilities? What else can you do to add value to your team or organization? 🤔 Do I really need a HR consultant if I’ve got an accountant? The answer is YES! I’ve been working with a client in the fitness space. They asked me to do a payroll audit and to make sure that their employment contracts were up to scratch, and that they were also compliant with the relevant Awards and employment conditions. 🔍What I found was that some of the permanent part time staff were not being paid annual leave. When I asked the owner of the business, were they aware of that? They said, yes. They said their Accountant had advised them to make a written agreement with the employees that they wouldn’t be paid for annual leave, so they could save on some money. 😳🤦♀️ Unfortunately, this is not the case. If you’ve got employees who are clearly paid under an Award condition, and they’re clearly permanent employees, then they do need to be paid annual leave, and you can’t withhold that even if you have it in writing. ✍️ And while the Accountant was doing their best to advise their client and trying to help them, they were actually going against the legislation and illegally withholding monies from employees, which could end up in reputational damage, not to mention Fair Work complaint. 😱 💼 Are you confident in your payroll and employment practices? I recently got laid off from my entry-level recruiting role in a government health agency, which was kind of a bummer since we were all expecting our positions to be secure given the ongoing health worker shortage. But, you know how it goes – budget cuts before an election. 😅 Now, I have a chance to take a temporary job in the payroll department at the same health agency. This position is likely to extend beyond the initial six months, and it comes with a pay bump, which is always nice! 📈 My background in Excel and HRIS has caught the attention of the temp agency, even though I don’t have that specific payroll certification they're looking for. Here’s the thing: I’m at a stage in my career where I want to acquire relevant HR experience, not just shift from one admin-heavy role to another. I'm worried that jumping into payroll might be a step away from what I truly want, which is to gather hands-on experience relevant for “pure” ...
