Don’t trust the awards you see. Believe me, I know. I know of companies that got plenty of awards, only to burn down in flames a few months later. I know of companies that paid to get “that award”, just to display it on their website. So what should you trust? Nothing. Hope for the best and be miserable if you find the wrong partner. Just kidding. Ask these questions when vetting business partners: — Did they help somebody similar to me and my company? — What results do they achieve? — What’s their 90-day plan? Remember, awards are nothing if they are not backed up by a solid strategy tailored to your needs. Agreed?

Happy Anniversary to Me - Part 1 (thanks, Walter T Geer III, for the challenge) Three years ago, I made my pandemic pivot into advertising (following a career in higher education) because my CEO, Joe Maglio, felt I had something different and beneficial to offer the industry. Thanks, Joe, for being a risk-taker.  My first day was February 4th, 2021. Today, as I sit here and contemplate this post, the line that comes to my mind most immediately considering this DEI work is, an invitation of sorts, offered by poet Lucille Clifton, who, in an iconic poem, asks, “won't you celebrate with me … that everyday something has tried to kill me and has failed.” So What Was There to Contemplate Where were we starting? Coming into this industry was both exciting and intimidating.  I was thrilled at what appeared to be actionable candor, as evidenced by the 600 & Rising call to action. There was rich dialogue across industry peers and leaders, inviting truth and evoking commitment. I couldn’t help but think What an exciting time to be alive and an awesome industry to join! I anchored my DEI work in Equity because, to me, that is what is initially required to implement real and lasting change. We needed to assess our practices and implement meaningful metrics to monitor our progress and impact our industry with positive change. In short, we needed to do a root cause analysis and be able to acknowledge that our industry was built on practices that have historically led to the exclusion and underrepresentation of marginalized individuals. As straightforward as that sounds…this required truth, and I had to ask the truth of myself and my newly adopted industry- were we ready to be honest? Are we ready to be honest? It seemed that not everyone was ready to tell the truth about and to themselves and start with Equity in mind. The role of equity in engendering meaningful, measurable, and lasting change wasn’t the shared perspective I thought it would be. People with power showed up as though this was the first time they heard these cries and calls for change in the industry, something I knew wasn't true.  It seemed that folks were clutching their metaphorical pearls, looking for DEI practitioners to cultivate a change in space and time when uncertainty was the only constant. So what, then, was a reasonable expectation? (go to Part 2)

It's Friday! So you know what that means.. it's 💐Grateful For You Friday! 💐 Today I want to spotlight my business accountant Tamica Goode, MBA, CPA. Tamica and I met through participating in the Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women- Black in Business program. And I am so happy we did! After hearing her insights and level of expertise as a CPA trained accountant with an MBA who has helped large corporations with their accounting, I called her as soon as possible to learn how we could partner. Here's something nobody tells you about entrepreneurship- whatever relationship with money you have had from childhood and into adulthood from your personal life, you also bring that relationship with money into managing the finances of your business. I grew up in a single parent household and let's just say, money was funny (and not the haha funny lol). So my relationship with money has been socialized by my own upbringing. Working with Tamica has taken the fear and uncertainty out of accounting and planning. She's given me tools to not only understand cash flow and profit and loss, but she's also validated me, telling me that we've been doing well overall. We have been profitable this year and according to Tamica, we are doing well in taking conservative approaches to our expenses. It may sound simple, but there are so many moving pieces in managing the finances of a business and it feels good when a trained professional tells you that you are doing a good job! (But she also gave me notes on where to improve lol) Tamica helped me to develop a strategy moving into 2025 that helps me to feel prepared and confident about the growth and direction of my business. I'm so grateful to Tamica for answering my endless questions and always creating space to make sure I understand our business numbers. I feel confident and very much looking forward to all that 2025 has to offer, much of this thanks to my accountant. Year 6 About six years ago, Arun Shukla, Andrew Klemm, CPA, and I met, along with our significant others (Elise and I weren’t married yet) to discuss setting up our own firm- and how we wanted to do it differently. We asked our better halves for three things: 1) understanding that we may not be successful and have a gap in income, 2) it would be a fair amount of work, please help us! and 3) help us come up with a name. Fortunately, 1 has been held off for six years; 2 is a labor of love each day and week; and 3, we appreciated their input but then went with something less creative! Six years in, I get recharged every time we connect with our team. The past week, we hosted our semi-annual offsite. We try to rotate locations to where team members may be or key projects and clients are. This time was no exception. The offsite is where we go to sharpen our skills, learn from each other, and deepen our SLKone, LLC team bonds. We were fortunate to have two clients come visit us to speak and share their experiences and what they look for in advisors. Further, we were fortunate to have Dr. Sridhar Balasubramanian from UNC come and facilitate a number of learning sessions and workshops for us all. We cannot do this for our team and ourselves without our awesome clients, of course. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the time our team members commit to not just attending, but also helping develop content to share with the team. And finally, I have to give great thanks to our Business Manager, Isabella Siniscalchi Doval, who I consider my right hand in helping keep us running smoothly.
