Congratulations to Maggie Westfal, M.D., who has been named a Hollings clinical scholar. Dr. Westfal is a colorectal surgeon, and her project is titled, "Implementation of a Pilot Program for Opportunistic Salpingectomy at the Time of Gastrointestinal Surgery at MUSC: An Evaluation of Patient and Provider Knowledge and Attitudes." The goal of this research is to assess the knowledge and attitudes of patients and GI surgeons regarding opportunistic salpingectomy (removal of fallopian tubes to prevent ovarian cancer) and to implement an opportunistic salpingectomy pilot program to assess feasibility and outcomes at MUSC.  More about our clinical scholars here: https://lnkd.in/e98bMsgN #ClinicalResearch #Salpingectomy

The two-day closing symposium at Universitäres Herz- und Gefäßzentrum Hamburg, Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf for the INCREASE study was a resounding success. The symposium featured a comprehensive discussion of key aspects of ERAS and strategies for enhancing perioperative patient care. The session was highlighted by a keynote address Prof. Henrik Kehlet from Copenhagen, one of the most experienced ERAS spokesmen in Europe, delivering an inspiring presentation. INCREASE (INterdisziplinäre und sektorenübergreifende Versorgung in der HerzChiRurgiE am Beispiel von minimal-invASiven HErzklappeneingriffen) is a prospective, randomized-controlled, bicentric study that compares the ERAS model with standard therapy in the setting of minimally-invasive surgery at Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf and Universitätsklinikum Augsburg under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Evaldas Girdauskas. Case of the Week In the case of a 63-year-old male with metastatic cancer causing a pathological fracture in his right acetabulum, surgeons planned to excise the tumor and surrounding area, prompting concerns about physical alteration and mental impact. To address these, a #3Dprintedmodel of the patient’s anatomy was requested to visually and tactilely explain the pathology and procedure necessity. This model not only aided the patient in understanding and accepting the intervention but also facilitated surgeon communication and education, easing anxieties and enhancing procedural clarity. ESSO Course on Fluorescence Guided Surgery We participate in the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) Course on Fluorescence Guided Surgery. It will be held on 6-7 June, 2024. In this course participants will obtain a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals and state-of-the-art applications of fluorescence imaging of tumors (primary, metastases), sentinel lymph nodes, vital structures (bile ducts, ureters, nerves) and perfusion assessment of organs and tissues.
