Let's feature another one of our Summer 2023 Internship Success Stories! Congratulations to Jasmin Mehal on her Internship with Cummins, and to all of our 2023 Interns!    1) Briefly describe your major project(s) or tasks over the summer.     Over the summer, I undertook two significant projects that showcased my capabilities in market research and data analysis. Firstly, I led an extensive market research initiative that involved comprehensive demand analysis, evaluating value chains, assessing government policies, and devising market development strategies. Additionally, I successfully managed a peer review analysis project focused on providing crucial insights to support the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) process. Both experiences allowed me to demonstrate my expertise in driving projects to successful completion while delivering valuable insights to inform decision-making processes.   2) What is the most important thing you learned from your internship?   As an MBA intern at Cummins, the most important thing I learned from my internship was the significance of cross-functional collaboration and effective communication within a global organization. Working on various projects with teams from different departments and locations highlighted the value of leveraging diverse perspectives and expertise to solve complex problems.   3) What do you think was the most critical factor(s) in preparing you to succeed at your internship?   Firstly, my academic background and coursework in business administration and relevant fields equipped me with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills necessary for the tasks ahead. Additionally, my previous work experiences and exposure to diverse business scenarios honed my problem-solving abilities and adaptability. Furthermore, my proactive approach to seeking knowledge about Cummins' industry, products, and corporate culture beforehand definitely proved to be advantageous during the internship.

It was fun to look back and reflect on my first summer internship experience over two decades ago for The Switchboard’s recent edition on learnings from summer jobs and internships. Thanks Julia Levy for the feature. My first summer internship was on a manufacturing floor at GE. I was a 19-year-old kid there to help make the jobs of individuals who had worked on the line for 30+ years easier. I quickly realized that getting work done depended on first building trust and credibility through non-work-related conversations, and over time, achieving small wins to eventually be trusted to drive sustainable change. Building trust still remains an integral part of driving change in everything I do, as it lays the foundation for effective collaboration, meaningful relationships, and sustainable success. Every day, our interns experience the power of the ITW Business Model through real-world, on-the-job assignments. Axel Freund, an industrial management technology student at Northern Illinois University and a Safety intern at ITW Shakeproof knows this first-hand. Through his internship, Axel has been able to learn more about what makes ITW successful while gaining valuable experiences to ignite his career journey. Q: Why did you choose to intern at ITW? A: I thought the huge scope of ITW’s operations would act as an excellent catalyst for learning about general industry, business operations, and my role. Further, throughout the interview process, the folks I spoke with represented the company extremely well and showed it was a friendly place to work, which is important to me. Q: What has been your most enjoyable intern experience this summer? A: I loved working with United Way in Chicago during ITW’s Day of Action. Not only was it a great way to spend a day, but it helped me meet other professionals in the company and build my network. Q: What has been one of your biggest takeaways from your internship so far? A: There is so much to learn, and the sky is the limit. I am really getting a grasp on the scale of business and all the interworking parts in a way that previously was not on my radar. I am getting a good idea of what avenues I can take through my career to get where I want to go. #ProudToBeITW
