Johnson Outdoors & Major League Fishing: United for a Cleaner Future We’re excited to recap the recent success of the Clean Earth Challenge! On Monday, August 5, professional anglers from the Bass Pro Tour, MLF staff, and local teams in New York and Kentucky came together to make a significant impact on our environment. Despite challenging weather conditions, our dedicated volunteers collected over 1,082 pieces of trash from the St. Lawrence River in New York and Kentucky Lake. A special thank you to the Louisville (New York) Recreation & Maintenance Department for their ongoing efforts to maintain such a beautiful and clean environment at the Massena Intake Boat Launch. At Johnson Outdoors, we believe in the importance of preserving and restoring the outdoor spaces we all love. The Clean Earth Challenge is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. Let’s continue this mission and reach our goal of removing 10 million pieces of litter from the great outdoors. #CleanEarthChallenge #PlacesWeLoveSpacesWeProtect #NationalWildlifeFederation #JohnsonOutdoors #JohnsonOutdoorsFamily

Today is #WorldRewildingDay. If you're unfamiliar with the term: Rewilding is the process of protecting an environment and returning it to its natural state, including by bringing back wild animals that used to live there. One major rewilding effort we're working on: restoring grizzly bears to California. The grizzly bear is California’s state animal and the centerpiece of its flag and seal — but a grizzly hasn’t roamed the wilds of the Golden State in 100 years. Decades of persecution — not habitat loss — drove grizzlies off the landscape. Returning these animals to the state’s open spaces is a key step in rewilding California and protecting one of America’s most iconic species. Learn more: https://biodiv.us/3PsWPQU

Over the past two decades, the western part of the United States has experienced increasingly severe wildfires, prompting a critical need for coordinated mitigation responses across the region. In partnership with Colorado State Forest Service, Colorado Department of Natural Resources and Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control, we are proud to have provided a data-driven, people-first organizational assessment that outlines the state’s present-day wildfire response strategy across key agencies. The report also provides both short-term and long-term actionable recommendations for the future that aim to improve organizational efficiency while enhancing resilience and public safety. #WildfireMitigation #ForestManagement #Wildfires #Resilience

Center for Biological Diversity SecDebHaaland has done nothing so is worthless and has failed hashtag #wolves by NOT reinstituting federal protection for Gray Wolf that was protected for 45 years until #Trump admin Wolves’ facial expressions reveal their moods https://lnkd.in/gj4BaFK3 Study identifies subtle facial cues that help keep harmony within the pack When wolves are tumbling, nipping, and baring their fangs at one another, it could mean an all-out brawl is brewing—or simply be a bit of playful roughhousing. So how do the carnivores know what their comrades are thinking before it’s too late? According to a new study, subtle facial cues help wolves signal their intentions. This facial communication isn’t just good manners—it helps maintain cohesion within the pack. “These [facial expressions] … say ‘hey we’re playing now, and it’s just for fun,’ or ‘now, it’s actually for real,’” says Christina Hansen Wheat, an ethologist at Stockholm University who was not involved with the study. “It’s a very fine-tuned communication tool.” Spending over 135 hours with multiple captive wolf packs, the researchers found five distinct facial expressions that wolves use to communicate different levels of playfulness and aggression. During playful interactions, for example, a wolf might open its mouth and relax its lips. If play-fighting goes a step too far, the wolf may pull back its lips, revealing its gums and narrowing its eyes. If things continue to intensify and look to boil over into an all-out fight, the wolf will reveal a light spot on the very top of its gums: a blazing red warning flag. This complex gradient of wolf expressions contrasts with domestic dogs, who only have one expression for play and one for aggression. In the future, the researchers hope to investigate why domestication changed dogs’ facial repertoire, theorizing that simpler expressions may help dogs communicate with their human companions.
It's #WolfAwarenessWeek and if you've been following us for a while, you know we've been fiercely fighting for years to protect America's wolves. We’re working on multiple fronts to ensure a real future for this iconic species: 🔸 Working to bring federal protections to all wolves, including in the northern Rocky Mountains. 🔸 Fighting state-by-state against plans to hunt, trap and poison wolves. 🔸Expanding and activating a powerful grassroots network to speak out for wolves across the country. These majestic animals occupy less than 15% of their historic habitat and, if they’re ever going to fully recover, they must be protected from coast-to-coast. MCP® Advanced (AGM-227) on an 8' x 18' spacing (302 TPA) after 6.5 years in the field in King and Queen County, VA. By widening out your spacing using ArborGen MCP®, you can accomplish multiple objectives such as increasing tree diameter, transitioning more stems to chip-n-saw and sawtimber at younger ages, reducing future pulpwood, and maintaining your understory grasses/herbaceous layer longer for wildlife.

🌍The Black Grouse Translocation Project: Our Misson We’re excited to share our groundbreaking effort to combat the decline of black grouse populations. Our project’s first phase focuses on understanding brood foraging habitats in the North Pennines. With this knowledge, the second phase aims to translocate and re-establish black grouse in the North York Moors—expanding their range to suitable areas and giving them a better chance to thrive. Using radio transmitters and GPS tags, we are tracking their movements, settlement patterns, and survival to guide moorland management and protect the species from future climate impacts. With support from Natural England’s Species Recovery Programme, we’ve already seen positive results—seven females tagged this spring, five nests, and three successfully hatched broods. However, as funding is coming to an end, we need your help to continue this vital work. Watch the video to learn more about how you can support our efforts to secure the future of the black grouse.
