In the world of hype cycles and every other company trying to do the most ‘hold my beer’ move - here's what this one did step 1 - MyTabAl gets an idea step 2 - raises 2.5 million USD funds step 3 - buys friend.com domain for 1.8 million USD The math isn’t mathing probably, but it did work, I guess? Got me talking about. Is this that when they say you gotta spend more on marketing….maybe not. But what the heck is a Friend AI Necklace that goes around your neck? It’s yet another ‘AI Powered’ standalone device. After the hype and immediate failures of the Humane AI pin, and Rabbit R1 - Friend AI Necklace is the next notable device in this niche new category that has massive ongoing identity crisis issues. Friend AI Necklace openly claims to NOT help you with productivity, replace your smartphone, or ‘revolutionize’ the way you use the internet. It just wants to be a friend to you, and be there for you ‘always listening’. So how does it work?  It’s an ‘always listening’ device. It will connect to your smartphone, and basically be monitoring everything around you via using your smartphone sensors. What’s good about it?  If you ask me, nothing…. But if you want to be more open to new products, this one has few things going for it: - It has no subscription service tied to it like the Humane AI Pin  - It doesn’t have any weird account connection requirements like the Rabbit R1 did  - It is much cheaper than similar products in this category  - It communicates using subtle notifications directly to your phone via the Friends App What’s not so good then?  Well for starters, there are major privacy implications for an ‘always listening' device to be always around you. Other companies like Rewind.ai are working on similar concepts. I am not sure if us humans are ready for this new weird personalized AI future. On top of that, this device relies on your smartphone, so if the connection is bad or the internet is out, it’s basically a pebble on your neck. A big one. Not to mention the additional strain a device like this is going to cause to your smartphone's battery life. Lastly, it is yet another ‘AI device’ and I am not so sure any of the ones have hit the mark so far. AI in this context is just too loose and I don’t think is up for the job. It’s (LLM AI) still basically a sophisticated next-word-predictor and this use case doesn’t click well for me. So are you ready to replace your friends (ones you never had anyway)? The future is here

What happened last week? Apple Intelligence – the dawn of a new AI era? Despite all the recent announcement, so far, no one outside of Apple has used Apple Intelligence yet - it will not launch until fall 2024 and even then it won’t work on 90+% of the installed iphone base. However, Apple is very focused on personal context and privacy. Imagine you could ask Siri “how long will it take to drive my kid to the sport center the trainer mentioned the other day?” The secure, private index of your activities and content is on your device (iphone), tracking apps and being able to combine them to answer the question above. A cloud based LLM like ChatGPT has none of this context today, Google Search and Meta have bits only. In addition, Apple would have gen AI models run on power-efficient, individual devices paid by the users (not by the CAPEX budget of ChatGPT and the likes). Why it matters? At the minimum, this could lead to a new super cycle of iphone/device sales, at maximum it could shift the entire power dynamic in the gen AI world.

No, this is not an episode of black mirror, but a real product. Humane™ , founded by Apple alumni Imran Chaudhri, unveiled their Aipin, a device designed for interacting with large language models, not apps. You talk to it, you do not type. Its operating system, “Cosmos”, is designed to route your queries to the right tools automatically rather as opposed to download and manage apps. With this device, Humane™ ambition is to strip away all the interfaces we have been used to. A few use cases were showcased in the launch video, as “catch me up” which will summarize all messages / emails, or holding food in front of the camera to get in real time nutritional information. The plan is also to get shopping / retail and navigation capabilities. This is a very interesting step towards “real world AI”, and a future where technology disappears - keen to see how this product will change (or not) the future of smartphones. What do you think? This trend has been fueled by the success of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, which has taken the world by storm. 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗶𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? Sir Jony Ive played a lead role in bringing iPhone to life in 2007. The world changed on that launch date. We have witnessed many consumer devices since then. Amazon’s Echo, Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3 have created a new layer of consumer interest recently. But, we are yet to see the next big mass-market consumer electronic device, “the next iPhone”. Ive thinks the smartphone he helped create has become too addictive for a human. In 2018 he said that Apple had a “moral respons­ib­il­ity” to take steps on addict­ive apps on iPhone. He proactively lim­its his children’s screen time. In 2019, he left Apple to launch his own company, LoveFrom. Ive is now approached by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, who launched ChatGPT in 2022.  ChatGPT brought AI into a software product that was so easy to use, easier than using social media. Altman wants Ive to create “iPhone of artificial intelligence”, who seems to have SoftBank’s go-ahead to the tune of $1 billion. They hope to create a more nat­ural and intu­it­ive user experience for inter­act­ing with AI, in the way that the iPhone’s innov­a­tions in touch­screen com­put­ing unleashed the mass-mar­ket poten­tial of the mobile inter­net. I guess Ive may create a device to access AI capabilities without screens. He may use voice, gestures, eye and body movements to interact with his device. He may save us from screens. Or he may drive us into an AI limbo.
