The African Union's efforts through the CAADP Strategy and Action Plan are a pivotal step in reshaping the future of Africa's agrifood systems. The commitment to boosting food production and expanding value addition within a 10-year framework holds immense potential for long-term sustainability and self-reliance. As highlighted during the recent summit in Kampala, the adoption of the 2026-2035 CAADP Strategy and the Kampala Declaration serves as a bold and transformative vision for Africa’s agricultural future.
Africa has the natural resources, the potential, and the entrepreneurial spirit to feed itself. However, the journey towards achieving this goal demands a multi-faceted approach. It requires a holistic integration of innovation, sustainable practices, robust infrastructure, market access, and most importantly, empowering local communities, especially smallholder farmers, who are the backbone of the continent’s agricultural sector.
This transformative agenda will necessitate cross-sector collaboration between governments, the private sector, and international partners, as well as a strong commitment to investing in youth, women, and technology in agriculture. The Kampala Declaration's emphasis on sustainable growth aligns well with the pressing need to address climate change, enhance food security, and ensure equitable access to nutritious food across the continent.
Africa's path to self-sufficiency in food production is not just about increasing yield—it’s about reimagining systems that are resilient, inclusive, and capable of withstanding global challenges. The conversations sparked by the CAADP strategy are essential to ensure that the continent’s agrifood systems not only feed its people but also contribute to global sustainability goals.
As we look ahead, let us continue to support initiatives like the CAADP Strategy, and focus on creating environments where Africa's agrifood systems can thrive, ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for generations to come.

2moYou are right, but more importantly, our grains and cereals need to eliminate the Monsanto and others’ Genetically Modified Organisms therein! There is a decades old cereal on sale at most Supermarkets proudly advertising its cereal/corn content as 86,4 percent GMO’s!!! The argument (uneasily obtained from government 25 years ago) is/was SA cannot afford to feed the nation on non GMO cereal!
